College Boasts Strong Debate Squad for Season the year 1957-5- 8 rolls around d our debaters, the power seems to be in Dixies favor Dixie last year sent their four debate teams on six trips. When the totals were summed up, the records were as follows: Two teams were finalists at As on silver-tongue- BYU. One team lost only one debate out of six at the University of Utah, and two were finalists in ex-tem- p. Four teams lost only two of twelve debates and placed one superior and two excellents in extemp at Long Beach, Calif. Unde hot words one of USCs best teams, one of UCLAs best teams, and one of University of San Franciscos best teams were defeated by Dixie. All of these teams were composed of students who had four years of experience in debate. Dixies machine of words marched on to take sweepstakes in debate and p at Carbon. Dixie then entered the national forensics meet at Bakersfield, Calif., and placed two finalists in p and one in proetry reading. The four debate teams reached in impromptu as the well as debate. Then Dixie used their experience for practical reasons when they used their power to elect the national debate president, Thelma McCuris of Weber. With this much background and experience behind our debates, this record should be improved. Unless other students wish to join, only three of Dixies original four teams will carry on this record. The debate club would like more members. Anyone interested should contact Mrs. Brooks. The schedule of the class hasnt been decided as yet, but it will start in the middle of the quarter. Those participating can figure on several trips, some of which will be to California and Utah unex-tem- ex-tem- semi-fina- ls iversities. The subject for debate is as foResolved: That the requirement of membership in at labor orgallows : nization as a condition of employment should be illegal. This subject should be very entertaining as well as educations! for participants. Tf vou expect to outshine your neighbors build a good reputation and keep it polished.
