Show VOLUME VII WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11. 1957 Dean of Students Greets Dixie College Housing Policy Is Announced Enrolees For Hew Year i t We bid you welcome to opportunity. Dixie offers nothing else. We have no sure formula for maturity nor evep a sure formula for an education which does not demand the actiye effort of you students. You are' going to make decisions this yean which will materially affect your future life. These will not be spectacular decisions but will be the small commonplace decisions which you will make each day. The decision to get up a little earlier to allow more time for study. The decision to attend class and forego some promised transitory pleasure. The decision to refrain from cribbing in an examination. Each of these may seem trivial to you at the time but they add up to a mature person when you make the proper decision in each of the instances. An area wherein your decisions will bear immediate fruits is that of student government. Here is one of your last opportunities to learn how to make yo.ur voice heard in self government, before you are graduated into adult society outside of college. Here we can and will give you every assistance to assure you of an understanding of the function of To realize full growth each of you should give of your time and talents to the activities of Dixie college and the community. It is through this giving that we finally learn the true worth of service and realize the benefits which are ours as we become a giving member of society instead of a receiving member. DONALD C. CAMERON O J wb rfo ij jo 5 3 Because of our experience in the past with an extremely small percentage of the students who attend Dixie, we have seen fit to draw up a contract which you are asked to sign with the householder from whom you are renting. This contract protects the householder from the small percentage of students who might break furniture or in other ways damage property or leave it in an unclean condition. It also protects the householder against a student moving without notice. We feel that these are protections for you also. Because of the few we have lost some of the choice apartments which have previously been available to students. With the use of this contract we feel that you can be assured of a place to stay in the year to Come. We ask that each person who is registered at Dixie college and not living at home check with the Dean of Students or his secretary and obtain a contract if this has not already been taken care of. At the time you are given your con- idea of the regulations we are printing a few of the more generally important ones below. Students must keep their quarters clean. Students shall be expected to keep the plumbing and other facilities clean and in good operating condition. If minor repairs are needed, the householder shall be notified as soon as possible. Quarters shall be quiet after 10 p. m. When entering your quarters at a late hour it is expected that you will make a minimum of noise and show respect for the sleep of others. No late parties shall be permitted at any time in student quarters without the express permission of the householder. It is assumed that the students will refrain from keeping and using alcoholic drinks in their quarters. Any differences which arise between the student and the householder should be settled by them if possible. The office of the Dean of Students is available to offer tract you will also receive a copy assistance in arbitration of these of the Dixie college housing regu- difficulties if necessary. We are happy to see those of you who have been here before, back on the campus. We extend to all of you new students the same friendly hand that made them want to return. If you will have it so, there is much at Dixie for you. For the most part you will find that what you will take with you will depend to a large degree on the spirit with which you came. Students with a whats in it for me attitude, and they are few', find little of note to talk about w'hen they leave. But those who recognize that they have something to give, and do their best to give it, leave the school and themselves richer for having been here. For them the rewards are beyond measure. All groups who wish to use Dixie college buildings, rooms, or equip- ment for activities other than will those regularly scheduled make application for such use on a special form available at the desk of the Presidents secretary. If the room, department, or piece of equipment is under the supervision of a division or department head his signature must be obtained. The signature of the superintendent of buildings and grounds must always be obtained, and should there be a possible conflict with other school activities, the signature of the chairman of the scheduling committee. Groups not directly affiliated with Dixie college will be required to pay a fee according to an established schedule on file with the Presidents secretary. Once permission has been obtained, and the fee acessed, the individual or group making the request must pay the fee to the treasurer, or make arrangements to do so prior to the time of use. In any event his signature must be affixed before the request form is complete. It can then be used as an admit form which will authorize the custodian in charge to make available such facilities as have been requested. If a student, or a group of students, finds it necessary to use any school facilities after 11:00 p. m. it will be his or their responsibility to arrange for a faculty sponsor to be in attendance. Unless this is done. .chn3inmi of respnncjumtv a 3 3 y. 2- scheduling committee: I. All scheduling is to be initiated to the presidents secretary in the office either by phone or in person. But without it, things would really be chaotic. You will note from a study of this first issue, and from organization your student handbook, that we also have evolved methods of doing things that make it easier for all of us to live harmoniously together. We request that you keep this issue in a handy place in order that you might know how to go about doing the many things we hope you will do. We are looking forward to another banner year at Dixie college. We are most pleased with the enthusiasm that seems to be present as we begin. If it wears a bit thin, if you feel the need to visit with someone, take advantage of the fact that we are small enough to know each other.
