Then they were able to attend an assembly featuring President Wade. In the afternoon the orientation workshops began. A children's parade, the first rodeo of the Dixie Roundup and an outdoor movie rounded off the days events. Friday, the registration and workshops continued. That afternoon the beauty parade began and at 8:00 p.m. the second night of the rodeo. This was followed by a dance at 9:00 p.m. Saturday night, September 17, was the general parade and the final night of the rodeo. At 7:00 p.m. students loaded busses and traversed to the Sound and Light Show at Tanner Amphitheatre in Springdale. Sunday, September 18, featured a fireside in the LDS Institute where President Wade again addressed the students. Tuesday, September 20, the morning started with the Welcome Assembly in the gym. Rudy Iverson, Dean of Students, welcomed the students and was followed by President Wade. Wade emphasized that " the faculty's main interest is the success of the students." He made a special welcome to the foreign students attending Dixie College. He told how Hansen Stadium came to be and how impressed the Hansens Wendy Hansen Welcome Week was a time for students to become acquainted with Dixie College and to meet new people. The week, full of activites, started September 12 and ended September 24. Many of the activities seem to help students relax, have fun and feel at home here at Dixie. On September 12, "Ice Breaker" games started at both the field south of the gym and the Institute. According to Loid Sherwood, "It was a blast and a nice way to get to know people." Tuesday, September 13, many students went to the hydrotube (waterslide) at the city pool. Later there were games and at 4:00 p.m. the dorms held and open house for the parents. At 8:00 p.m. a pillow movie took place. Wednesday, September 14, there was a Freshman Social at the LDS Institute. They played games, had a tour of the instutute and met instructors and ward bishoprics. All of the wards gathered in the gym where musical numbers and talks from local speakers were presented. The event took place Snow Canyon. in Mrs. "D," Howard Putnam, and Claudine Cooper perform as a part of the annual Wilcome Week were with the cleanliness of Dixie College. President Wade warned against involvement with the law and breaking rules. That night students met at Snow Canyon for the annual sand blast. Activities such as football and volleyball were followed with the movie highlight or the evening--th- e Private Eyes and dinner. Wednesday was a busy day with the start of classes followed with a display of Dixie talent in the Gong Show. Thursday, September 22, featured Assembly. All three are members of the Dixie College faculty. the LIDSSA opening social with the wards competing against eachot her in relay races. This was followed by a slide show and dinner. Friday, September 23, hosted a dance with the announcement of the 1983-8Rebelettes as a highlight. Finally, Saturday, September 24, was the game between Dixie and Mesa Community College with Dixie as the victor. Overall it was a busy and well planned two weeks with a chance for students to get to know each other and Dixie College. 4 |
