Show THE DIXIE SUN PAGE TWO Associated Students President's Message On .behalf of the Dixie student council, I would like to welcome all students, new and old, to the Dixie campus. This will be decisive year for the college. We are planning a work and fun very active year of for you students, and we ask now you that each of you, at any time with a suggestion or request which we can help, will come and tell us about it. We were elected we are by you to serve you and We are interested to know which of you new students have talents which would benefit the rest of the school, and we ask you to let us know about them. Those of us who have been here before think of Dixie as a sort of home away from home. She has .always .been famous for her friendly spirit which is open to anyone who will try to find it. If you are friendly, happy, and smiling you cannot help being a success here. R. J. SNOW Public Address System Policy Set for All Uses Division Directors Serve eager to do so. A public address system is owned, maintained, and operated of by Dixie college as a means mass communication. Primarily, its purpose is to serve as an aid and describing in advertising school functions. The college public address system may be used by clubs, wards, it committees, and similar non-prof- purorganizations for advertising to the community, the amplifying machine may be used at the rate of one dollar per hour or fraction thereof.. Whenever any organization ad-or person uses the college public dress system, it shall be understood that the organization or person will 'be responsible for the safe care of said equipment. If any loss or damage due to carelessness or negligence occurrs, the borrowing shall pay organization or personcosts necesall material and labor satsary to repair the equipment isfactorily. If a borrower fails or refuses to pay .for damages, that borrower forfeits the right to use the equipment again. Any user of the college public address system represents the college. Use of the equipment, therefore, must conform to good ethical practice. As a service Use of Shops Policy Is Stated for Understanding The shops and equipment are available for school and public use when such use does not interfere with class instruction. However, only trained andor experienced operators may use equipment which involves safety of the operator or damage to the equip-th- e instructor. 2. Equipment shall not be loaned for use away from the school premises without written permission from the office of the school administrator. 3. Tools or equipment must not be removed from the tool rooms or shops by any individual other than those using same for a specific class in the department. Permission must be obtained from and a borrowing agreement signed with and a return personally made to the instructor. 4. The shops will be used for instructional purposes and not for school repairs, except where such repairs do not in any way inhibit, limit, or adversely affect .the instructional efficiency of the shops. 5. When other departments are planning to use the shops or equipment, notice must be given to the instructor at least two weeks prior to date desired to begin work. 6. Other departments requiring student aid to make projects are to assume full responsibility for clearing students, and for checktime and turning in the student 1. time. Shops are not storage spce for other departments. No item for repair or work shall be placed in the shops without the instructors permission. 8. Departments desiring to use shops should plan for such use during school hours. 9. Payment for supplies used by other departments or by individuals is to be made to the school 7. As Academic Counselors In Aiding All Students (Continued from Page 1) sion, will be your academic counselor, will help you plan your course of study, will check to see that you fill all of your requirements, and will keep your records. The division of occupational training, with iMr. Wayne R. as director has been established for those of you who are majoring in business, auto mechanics, home economics, machine shop, welding, or woodwork. While many of the programs are terminal in nature, if you are interested in these fields you should consult frequently with 'Mr. McConkie in order that you may fill all the requirements for graduation from Dixie college and in order to receive the certificate of preparatory training which are given in some of these fields. Mr. McConkie will also help those of you who are preparing to teach in any of these areas. You can find him in his office in the wood shop immediately behind the science building. Mr. E. Ellis Everett is the director of the division of physical science. While Mr. Everetts principal interest is in mathematics and physics, he is prepared to counsel with you regarding the professions of geology, chemistrv, and the various fields of engineering. Should you plan to teach in any of these areas you should register in this division. Mr. Everett may be .found in room 25S, which is located in the northwest corner of the top floor of the science building. The division of sofcal science completes our academic division. Should you wish to major in history, in social science, economics, political science, or psychology, or if you plan to teach in the elementary grades, consult each quarter with Mr. A. Karl Darson, the director and academic counselor in this division. His room, 16A, is located at the foot of the south stairs in the basement of the administration building. If you are uncertain as to what your lifes work is to be, you should select a division in order that you might be guided into exploratory work that will help you in this choice. In case you find a field that you like, it will be easy to have your records transferred to those of another director. The important thing is to choose a division in order that you can be sure that someone will be responsible for helping you check the necessary detalis of group 'filing, preparation for graduation, and for advanced work. You will tind the directors most anxious to assist you. At Dixie college the emphasis is on you. Mc-Conk- ie Change of Grade Request Policy of School Stated In order that we might prevent students from exerting pressure on faculty members to change the grades, the faculty by unanimous consent has agree to the following procedure: Except where there is an obvious clerical error, a grade shall not be changed uptil the student has made formal request in writing that this be considered by a committee composed of the teacher, the director of division and the registrar. Should the committee wish to ask the student questions he should be available in order that the matter might be thoroughly discussed. The decision rendered by this committee shall be final. Wednesday, September 12, 1956 Scheduling Committees Dixie College Discusses New WAA Instructor Tells Tell Procedures, Policies Student Housing Policy Department's Attractions The following procedures have been adopted as criteria for the scheduling committee: Regulating School Year I am thrilled, indeed, when I I. All scheduling is to be initiated to the presidents secretary in the office either by phone or in person. This must be done at least one week in advance of the date requested. At the time the scheduling request form will be .filled out to provide the following information: a. Date of request. b. Date and time of proposed activity. c. Building andor equipment to be required. d. Organization or individual making request. e. chaperon or sponsor attending the function. f. Type of activity. g. Rental charges, if any. II. Scheduling' committee will meet once a week to take action on requests accumulated since the last meeting. If there is an appeal of action taken by the committee the person or persons involved in the appeal will be responsible for making arrangements to meet with the committee and present their problem. III. After approval of the date, the event will be placed on the master calendar. All cancellations must be made by phone or in person with the presidents secretary; no one else has authority to add or change items on the master calendar. IV. The schedule of events pertaining to athletics and other activities which are made up in advance must be placed in (the hands of the scheduling committee at the beginning of the season. Since this is a privilege any change in the schedule must be given, if possible, two weeks in advance to receive consideration. V. It is further recommended that all parlies or meetings which will be held beyond 10:30 p. m. will not receive favorable action by the scheduling committee if they are requested for nights other than Friday and Saturday. VI. We have a great many fields into which we can channel our talents to gain experience. A few of them are tap dancing, individual sports and a girls marching unit. Tap dancing can and will be a memorable experience for man students. It is a new program in the college which I am thrilled to introduce this year. I do hope 'both the male and female students will take advantage of this offering. I am sure it will enrich our dance program next spring. An individual sports course will combine many interests into one exciting compact quarter. Here you might enjoy anything from archery to field hockey. The business is controlled by a student union committee which is appointed by the student council. This committee, chairmaned this year by Jerry Quinn of Colton, Calif., is responsible for the formulation of policies which determine how the concessions will be governed. Also in the student lounge is a coin operated "juke box. It provides a good share of the income from the lounge, and is kept up to date on the latest in popular music by the committee. Profits from this enterprise are placed in a hospitality fund which is used to help pay the cost of entertaining visiting teams and traveling assemblies.
