S By La Vern Allen, For the Sophomore Class. I i . . . supporting. Schools may be formally founded on a certain day of a certain year but actually they need refounding every day of their existence. They need people to cherish them for that is the true spirit of the founder. Schools are more than building and equipment. They are the relationship of a community of wills. They are a communion of souls where mutual helpfulness is the keynote. Anything that helps to foster this spirit characterizes the founder, and anyone who helps to encourage it stretches forth his hand and sets a block in the foundation of the institution. So then anyone who helps the school in any way automatically adds his name to the list of the founders. People have helped the school in various ways. Some one or some many had to get the school located here. Somebody had to get the consent of the church and its financial assistance. Some donated money, others labor, others material with which to make the buildings. Some contributed in their mights others contributed their mites, so all in all it became a mighty work. Let us enumerate the good things done by the founders. Into a parched land they brought a cool fountain; out in the desert they developed an intellectual oasis ; out of a country side they made a cosmopolitan center. Into an place they brought the polished artists. Unto a sand waste they induced the agricultural ; expert into a land of hungering homes a knower of dietetics. Into a country of boys they brought the scout official ; into a vale of despair they brought the optimist, into a jargon of voices a spirit of unity, unto a people of children they brought in a hopeful day the pedagogue, the scientist, and those who know how to Play. Unto a yearning youth they brought the moral persuader. Unto hungering souls they brought the religious teacher: truly - ponsible positions throughout the nation. They include promising physicians, attorneys, teacheis, easiness men, and farmers. These banner students have represented our institution, thereby the founders, in many American and European universities. They carried the bayonet in defense of democracy in the late World War. They are valiant citizens in problems of commerce and government and fhey carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations. Oh, what an immense debt we owe to the founders of this school who made it all possible. Our only hope is partly to pay back our debt in that we may become masters of our difficulties, take advantage of our opportunities . And they are. Because of the founding of this institution, ve students are able to progress with great rapidity. Our first graduates numbered thirteen in the year 1913 and now in 1926 there were over seventy.
