BY ERIK DORN Dixie Sun Staff Writer St. George residents gathered at Congressman Jim Mathesons office Monday afternoon to give the congressman a piece of their mind on healthcare. Holding signs such as "Dont leave me with ) our trillion $ debt and "Right wing extremists ... Jefferson, Adams, Madison and Me! residents waited in line to bear their grievances to Mathesons field agent Michael Empey. Larry Meyers of St. George coordinated the meeting to let Matheson know where the residents of St. George stand on healthcare. Meyers said he couldnt get Matheson to come personally because he is only holding private meetings and not town e meetings. Meyers said Dixie State College students really need to pay attention to what is happening to their healthcare and let their congressman know how they stand. College students should be concerned about being able to pick their own healthcare, Meyers said. Just because you are in college doesnt mean you wont be affected by socialized healthcare. A few of the Dixie State College Republicans were present at the meeting. Jensen said the feedback they received from athletics was to make sure the words Red Storm were part of the athletic logo. We took all the feedback we got and decided to not put a bull in the logo, Jensen said. We also decided to take away the tornado. We wont have a tornado as a symbol. He said a D symbol will be on the logo as a prominent symbol. He said the new logo has a few lines indicating a storm is being kicked up, along with a few clouds. Johnson said the logo is trademarked and ready to go. He said it has already been sent out to a number of media outlets in the area. Jensen said: The logo will be on and athletics will use the old D they had before. Theyve ordered a lot of their jerseys and shirts and havent included the just the old D and the words Red Storm. They had to order their stuff before we got anything approved. He said they ordered 3,000 red with the new D logo that are passed out to students for free when they purchase books from the bookstore. He said in the future the new logo will be seen on more school Web bull-nad- jii o, sites, and other places like that. The icon that people really like is the D, Beatty said. Most didnt care about having a bull in the logo, A bull will still be running around at the games, but thats just a tangible thing to represent the school. Judd said currently the bookstore doesnt have any merchandise with the new logo on it because all the merchandise they have now had to be ordered last March. We have lots of cloth- ing with Red Storm on it, and as soon as we sell all this other stuff well be getting stuff in with the new logo, Judd said. By Spring semester we should have some merchandise with the new logo on it. As for the mascots new appearance, Jensen said instead of spending another few thousand dollars on having another Dixie Idol contest, they decided to avoid that process and take a different route. Weve gotten a lot of opinions from a lot of people and there was only one uniform answer that we always got, and that was that no one could decide on one thing," Jensen said. He also said they will still use the bull as the mascot, but theyre getting rid of the black bull costume. Jace Taylor, a junior business major from Fillmore, said he thought the black bull was retarded because his name was Ragin Red. Its definitely better than it was, he said. Jensen said they have gone through Alinco, a company in Salt Lake known for creating the Utah Jazz bear mascot, and had them design a few new concepts. The mascot will still be a bull, but he will be a red bull, Jensen said. His name will most likely be Rebel, but we need more feedback from students on that to make our transition better. Jensen said they dont feel like they're betraying the change to Red Storm. He said this will just help the student body to hold on to something thats important from the past. We might as well use the name Rebel somI Taylor said. think its a good idea. Jensen said they arent bgoing to push the bull ewhere, ecause student government feels that in order to make a smoother transition, students need to focus on the values and principles of the college as well as focus on winning games and not what the mascot is or the name Red Storm. Ashlyn Miller, a sophomore engineering major she from St. George, said the will always prefer Rebels, but shes OK with the change. I like the new logo and mascot more than the tornado or whatever that was, she said. The unveiling of the new mascot costume is planned to take place firs' Thursday during the seathe of football game son. sure We want to make intioduce the mascot is said properly, Jensen Hand .mainii taff Jo itenm .ouncec F |
