Show The Dixie Owl. St. George, Utah 11 light tap sounded on the door. Mildred in response to a look from Ethel got up and opened the door. A sight, very bewildering, met their eyes, for there stood a young girl, sensibly dressed, and carrying her own suitcase Mildred introduced the girls, found her a chair, and then helped remove her wraps. Oh, but you just looked beautiful, sitting around the fireplace, as I found you, she exclaimed joyfully, as she warmed her hands over the glowing flames. Yes, Ill bet we looked bewitching staring at her, wildeyed, as we were when she entered, Ethel whispered to Kate. The girls were really disappointed when Dorothy did not ask for a maid to unpack for her, because a whole day had been spent making a maids outfit for Patty Drake, who agreed to take the part on conditions that a good portion of the Christmasdinner should be saved for her. The girls invited their boy friends to spend the evening with them, and their invitations would have been declined had not the boys been so curious. You could tell it was something extra when Fred Storm, who had previously sworn off on parties of the sgrt, was there. And so the evening passed rapidly, and every guest had departed by ten oclock. Tuesday, which was now the day before Christmas, wras always a general mending day at the boarding house, and so Mildred asked the girls to come into her room to sew. Dorothy had seemed unusually quiet that day, and Mildred thought that perhaps if the girls could get together and have a lively discussion she would feel better. But she scarcely spoke and Mildreds repeated efforts to bring her in to the conversation failed. Then Elsie, who had noticed something wrong, asked her what was the matter. Girls, have you ever tried to deceive your best friends in a game or anything, just in play, you know? Well, if you have, didnt you have such a guilty feeling that you couldent enjoy the game? she asked. |
