thank than K U for the privilege of m meeting e e ting with the vw saints of salt lake lak e stake in their eu conference I 1 notice there is 18 dif difference terence between the turnout togy t and last sunday the large attendance cadance then was on account of the vue presence of president woodruff and apostle ceorl george e Q cannon AS 8 a rule you will find n d in i n all com that about one half attend worship because of curiosity or pop arity in the days of the apostles wine some were for paul and some for pollo but when some of the leser wr apostles appeared the attendance 30 yas small A suitable pere percentage oa should hould be out to worship on we 8 sabbath is not usually seen in w meeting houses in this stake at lei at such is the conclusion to which ry experience and observation have edme beame 1 I like to hear t our prominent etrel talk but I 1 also like to see the w latter day saints come out to bip ship god it if they come to 81 when t only prominent brethren thren are announced to speak oen the presiding authorities go to he jO penitentiary the result w wall be neglect at atleco of duty on the part of the C rk I 1 to those b JM was glad see ethren oren here last sunday but I 1 at out W 0 correspondingly disappointed w the small attendance this momi T 1 feel to say to the latter day agats who are here that we must chan ge our tactics or the lord will f ano another ther people to carry out designs 44 ui the year 1847 1 am told the venters veneers ve c our fathers entered this J V president brigham young oki 3 W upon apostle orson pratt to a this up prayer dedicating u and making a covenant in be of the people that they would hoep the commandments of god pay y one tenth of their increase to A hing the covenant was also oth ae in e effect that the saints would 11 SIder their inheritances as from f rom lord loni and the people were in truc ted to dedicate their homes for their fa families Vallies and their children thena aad ji their childrens children children after aa t was as a custom of ancient israel for I 1 feln the 1 elders to dedicate their amill es their tents and all that it had ha to the lord and when found that the law of god 1144 been violated the house ln in leh 10 the sin committed ly nr was was med and its contents destroyed m tt sold his birthright for a mal of pottage and it wu will yet a ap art th in the history of the saint saints dunces ten efty y have sold their ingerl do ees for thirty pieces of silver I 1 t to ia sell insider mider that I 1 have a right kaai my home to a stranger I 1 gaeve in treating all honorable people with respect but I 1 do not believe that the latter day saints can serve god while mixing up with the world there is no particular secret about this I 1 am not divulging any secrets when I 1 declare these things there was another law given unto israel about which I 1 wish to speak plainly solomon the wisest man who ever lived had not wisdom to keep this law which was thou not marry without unto a a stranger when he broke this law he was shorn of his wisdom after he married strange women many of the people strayed away and married among strange nations afterwards the word of the lord went forth commanding the children of israel to separate themselves from the gentile nations with whom they had intermarried inter married the result was that husbands were parted from wives and parents from children I 1 believe there is no need to mince these matters and that the time will come when this people will be separated from all others when a latter day saint marries a partner who does not believe in the gospel nor the resurrection of the of ead dead what is the result A house divided divided against itself I 1 admire a nation which separates itself from all others for this reason I 1 have always slays alays w ays admired the jews they cannot unite with unbelievers believers un without violating the rules of their faith they also are willing to close their places of business on the days set apart for their worship wor shio notwithstanding that they may lose a little trade tirade but it is only recently that Z C M I 1 have been induced to do this because it has been feared that by doing doing it trade would be lost by our transgressions we give gite occasion for un believers to blaspheme the word of god I 1 feel to say to those who we are here today act as leaven visit among your yo ur neighbors and act as ae a leaven does in the meal scores of young ladies indies of latter day saint parentage are marrying without the church unto strangers and many parents in the church dress their daughters like dolls and allow them to min mingle le with society in which they are led fed to marry strangers T tell e U your brethren not to do this tell them to separate themselves from the world but first separate yourselves there were sunday school children in the church the last report I 1 heard and the num nuin i iber ber has probably increased but there are many children of the latter day saints attending sectarian schools this means that the parents of these children have no faith in the gospel there is one thing I 1 admire about the catholic church they educate their children in the faith which the parents rents xu believe to be the truth I 1 call upon you to follow the example of the catholic church if you will not keep the comm commandments of god I 1 do not believe in stealing nor in teaching my children to steal I 1 believe in being honest and in teaching my children to be honest II 11 I 1 believe in the gospel and that god reveals his secrets to his servants the prophets I 1 believe it has been the providence of god that has brought to pass the condition this people are now in we are now so situated that the ti things of this people will have to go for the support of denominational schools and 1 thank god for it Is it necessary forthe for the latter day sainte Saint to be discourteous towards those who differ from them in religious matters because they educate their child the faith of the gospel no lo 10 father walsh the first catholic priest who ever labored in utah was wag given permission to use the Seventies Hall for for services for some months while he was trying to establish a church he was treated courteously although we did not believe in his religion I 1 do ao not believe in whitewashing and I 1 think we ought to do away with everything of the kund kind we are getting etting into such a condition that if if we were to meet the lord we could not look him in the face and the way we are going it will soon be impossible to tell what we do believe teach your daughters to marry men with whom they can be united for eternity the raid that has been made upon us has had bad a purifying purifying effect and it has brought to light soom scores of men who were ware hypocrites and who had married wives of whom they were not worthy I 1 know that there will be a resurrection of the dead I 1 know it as well as I 1 know I 1 live I 1 pray god to bless you and sanctity sanctify what has been said to your understanding if you have made up your mind to sell your inheritances sell them if bod have made up your minds to marry your daughters to strangers do so if you have made up your minds to educate your children in sectarian schools do so I 1 beldere in doing right or else in having liberty to do wrong woe woe unto this people if they do not turn unto the commandments of god PRESIDENT ANGUS M CAON I 1 next addressed the conference J am very gratified to see so large an attendance at the of our conference brother Taylor has drawn a comparison between the attendance attendant here today and last sunday but considering that it is the opening meeting of the conference the attendance is bettor better than usual we are being tested Br brother othlar jose joseph we h predicted that we would boi be we have been called to leave the world and walk in the paths of god realizing that the law shall go 0 fb forth A h f from ro amz zion I 1 on we are the jt salt of the earth but if the salt has lost its savor wherewith shall it be salted I 1 journeyed east a little over a year ago and visited on the atlantic coast and in the south and I 1 can say bay unto this people we are the most moat prosperous and b happy ifill and have most reason to b be thankful of any people upon this consider 11 promised land 91 9 1 but do you consider the imprisonment of our bret brethren bren and the grief of their families may be asked yes I 1 do but I 1 consider this one of the least causes of regret I 1 remember one brother who was in prison son but whom it was sought to I 1 indict indict again who wrote in a letter they cannot dig dungeons so deep nor build prison walls so high as to shut out the spirit of god from the hearts of his servants imprisoned therein he wrote other like sentiments ti but they sup suppressed his letters as ir treasonable ge he however brought them out of prison with him and read them to his family that they might remember the truths the they contained if we prefer darkness rather than light it is because our deeds are evil I 1 but if we have repented of our sins we have the holy spirit within us our hills teem with the precious metals and our fields with flocks and herds making it necessary for us to have more room to dwell in when brother taylor spoke of the increased tithing I 1 reflected that the richest do not pay the most tithing according to their means often the poor man and the widow observe this law more faithfully than does the rich man the test that the prophet joseph a spoke e u of was that after r we s should 0 b become me a great reat and we wealthy althy people in the rocky c mountains we should d be arl tried wl with w wealth h we see this fulfilled one man will apostatize on getting a title to a piece of land another will apostatize after he gets a horse and carriage and others lose lose their faith when prosperity comes to them let us keep ourselves pure from the corrupt influences of the world and render unto casar the things that are Cw and unto god the things that are gods let us hold our houses lands and all that we have subject to his divine direction that we may ma obtain an inheritance which sh shall be incorruptible the choir sang an anthem conference was adjourned until 2 p in benediction by apostle heber J grant sunday afternoon services began at 2 oc look the choir and congregation sang the hymn commencing where the voice of friendships heard sounding bounding like a sweet toned bird prayer by elder abram H cannon the choir sang farewell all earthly honors I 1 bid you yon all adieu the priesthood of the first ward officiated in the administration of the sacrament president angus M cannon stated that it ft had been the habit to sustain at these conferences the ward and quorum authorities but it had been deemed advisable hot to do this on the present occasion as it chui coui could be attended to in the proper wards and quorums qu president cannon then read the statistical report of the salt lake stake for the six months ending february showing as following seven apostles 12 patriarchs 1204 seventies high priests 2012 elders priests teachers 1320 1820 deacons members total officers and members children under eight years of age total number of families he
