Show OBITUARY NOTES JOHN LARSEN died at spring city county utah on may 13 1895 John Joho larson in his hia year rie kle was born in greis county denmark december 18 1823 1828 when the war broke out between denmark and germany in 1848 he was dratted drafted as an a soldier but through some intervening power he was permitted to remain in copenhagen and work at his trade as a tailor in making soldiers uniforms for the army he was from his bia youth religiously inclined and it was under these conditions that he became acquainted with apostle erastus snow and the other elders eiders fram arm utah soon after their arrival in copenhagen in the I 1 summer 1 l of 1850 and as an the first fifteen members were baptized on the of august of that year brother john lar sen aen was baptized on the of the same month by george 0 dykes and received confirmation under the hands of elder snow he was wan ever afterwards a faithful faith lul and zealous latter laiter day saint shortly after afier that he be married a miss anne jorgenson jorgensen from Slay else on bjelland Sj elland in the spring of 51 he went back to his bia old home in greis Jutt land together with hib bib wife and younger brother lauritz Laurl tz his parents parenia brothers and sisters all embraced the gospel and were baptized and a branch of the church was organized in that town over which 0 h he was wai called to preside he assisted in organizing other branches of the church in the immediate neighborhood one of which was wan in fredericia Frede icia ricia over which he also presided for a short time until be was called in 1853 to go to aalborg and preside over that conference which mission he filled with honor until his release in the spring of 56 with permission to go to 10 zion he lefi denmark with his wife and two small children a boy and a girl both of whom are now living in with a large family of children the company 0 of f emigrants with whom they traveled crossed the atlantic in a sailing vessel elder john van cott having charge of the company that year the emigrants were late in lea leaving ing the ibe frontiers and winter overtook them long before t they e reached the valley of the great calt lake ke and they suffered extremely with bu hunger er and cold sister larsen gave birth to a boy on the plains on the ot of september the child lived until the first of december wuen when it died and was buried three miles this side of green river the morning of us its burial brother larson larmeu was alone with hi his family the other t teams same having gone on as best beat they could he dug the grave in the frozen ground in this ibis solitary MOli tary wilderness and there laid to rest the darling baby who was then nine weeks old how often I 1 have heard him and his bis wife relate this sad incident as the greatest trial of their lile life A young man by the name of madsen who was with brother larsen in his wagon died the next day through sheer hardship and starvation for they had neither flour nor rice nor anything else to eat only as they could kill and eat their poor and worn out oxen they would all have perished had it not been for tile the help sent by the church authorities from salt sail lake city brother larsen had his bis feet so badly frozen that it ii took him about six months before he could walk on them again alter after their arrival in the valley he made his bis home in south weber weber county where him hia parents had previously settled anywhere and where he stayed until the general exodus in the spring of 1858 took place when he be came to springville Spring ville from there he went back to salt lake city where he stayed until the fall of 1859 when he with his family moved to ephraim sanpete the next spring he came to spring town now spring city where he made his permanent home brother john larsen has for many years acted in the capacity as head bead teacher in the ward and since the organization of the eightieth quorum of seventies in spring city he faith faithfully a filled the ion on of one of the presidents of that quorum he was an honest and upright man and leaves an aged wile wife nine children forty grandchildren and two great grandchildren six grandchildren having died to mourn the loss lose of a loving huts husband band and parent he was ailing for about two months and dropsy set in he passed away peacefully surrounded by his bl children and many grandchildren his life was a useful one worthy of emulation the burial took place on the dinst services being hold held in the meeting house under the direction of bishop allred and many sympathetic words were spoken by a number num berof of the leading elders to a large concourse of people who also followed the fhe remains to their last resting place laupitz LARSEN SARAH VIRGINIA WOOD died at loa wayne county utah may 25 1895 of lung disease barah virjinia ginia daughter of william and jane sanders anders and wife oi of william S wood deceased was born august 29 1853 at humphreys county tenn U S A she was an affect affectionate ionae wife and mother and a true and devoted latter day saint she leaves a husband and seven children mostly small and ganv friends to 10 mourn her loss sister wood will long be remembered by many of the missionaries who labored in the southern states during the dark days of persecution she was a particular friend of elder berry and others othera who labored in the field at that time was possessed posse sned of much moral courage and wood s up in their defense often befriending them in those perilous times the funeral services were held in in the lot loa meeting house bouse sunday may when elders willis E robison and joseph eckersley addressed the large congregation gre gation assembled and administered words of comfort and condolence to the bereaved A large procession followed the body of this faithful sister to its last resting place J E |
