Show A NEW WARDEN capt joseph amos is IR iu in this city and is an object of special interest from the fact that he is to be warden of the utah penitentiary under united states marshal parsons the change will be made in a very short time captain amos was up to the bastile lately looking over tile the ground he came from columbus ohio to fill the new position he and marshal parsons are old friends the captain is a G A B R man and had considerable eap exp experience ermence in connection with the provost mar marshals office during the war and since that time as an officer of the ohio state penitentiary he is about 45 years of age of height and ana portly build arthur pratt who may now be termed ex warden was appointed january 29 1888 by marshal dyer and since that lime has made an enviable record in his course toward those placed in hischar his charge geall all of them bear witness to his kind treatment and the enforcement of strict disc discipline by firm yet gentle means with one class imprisoned those held under certain united states laws he had haa little or no do trouble and regarding them he remarked 1 I could plow a furrow around a hundred acre field of such men and tell them to stay within the boundary and I 1 would feel perfectly safe that not one of them would disobey instructions with other classes of prisoners however he has sometimes had a different experience mr pratt however in retiring from the position of warden will not leave the service of the marshal va H e has been commissioned as deputy marshal and will be given charge of the ogden district with mr giesy and other assistants the ogden district is the most important in the territory As to the provo district there is some question between the newly appointed deputy mr B bacom bachman and mr C heafield Re afield as to wh which ic an h of these will be given charge the indications so far wi athey they can be observed are that deputy redfield red field will hold that position with deputies bachman norrell claussen and others on his force 0 there are now dow three commissioned deputies in the second district A Q G dyer aver jaw jas mcgeary and john armstrong with more in prospective it has not been announced who will have the leading place but i the probability is that mr mcgear mcgeary y will get it in the salt lake di district 6 tri C t wb which ich covers the third judicial district deputies vandercook cannon 4 franks and sprague are the only al 41 ones yet commissioned who the chief deputy will be has not yet developed captain Gre greenaa enmA was offered the place but did not accept evidently deeming the poal 4 tion of united states Commies commissioner loher 4 1 to be a better thing provided he got the business of the marshals office that this is assured is apparent from a the fact that lately the captain wawa was moving into new quarters his of 1 9 flee fice will hereafter be with attorney rj C 8 kinney first door south aap of clerk mcmillans Mc office |
