saturday morning charged with unlawful cohabitation the bishop was released from the penitentiary in april last after having served out a term for the same of offense rense and was not a little surprised that he should again have been taken up the foundation for the arrest seems to have been in the fact that he was present at a funeral with his plural wife and the allegation was that on their return they entered the house together the examination followed immediately upon the arrest and the evidence fell far short of being sufficient to justify his being bound over it was held that a witness W whose hose test testifying byj ng was material to the case was absent and the case w as continued without date to give time to secure the attendance of this witness bishop ballard was released on his own recognizance home from the states on septa elder john C snow of emery county reached his home from a mission to the southern states A report of his death had been published founded Mor IMor mons mODS charged with perjury for voting at the last congressional election is expected to take place and will make the proceedings ce of the session of vast importance elders mobbed the following was among the regular associated press dispatches and is dated birmingham alabama aug 26 three mormon elders engel taylar r and laird were severely whipped by regulators in marion county friday night they had been in the county some time and among their converts were two married women who left thel their r homes and families to follow the elders there is an elder named W J taylor laboring in alabama but when he was last heard beard from his field was in pike county about one hundred miles from marion county in which the whipping of ef mormon elders is said to have taken place lace no elder from utah of the name of engel or laird so far as we can leat aleain n is laboring in alabama it is possible pw pop sible that there may he local elders there bearing those names but the truthfulness of the dispatch seems open to question its closing sentence bears the evidence of untruthful truthfulness ness on its face and has doubtless been inserted as a fabricated apology for the outrage the strikes in addition to the strike at watson brothers august 26 there was some trouble at the culmer building with the plasterers the latter struck ck the ground being that they considered nine hours sufficient for a days work this matter will probably be settled without much difficulty in regard to the strike at watson brothers the members of the federated trades had a meeting in the evening Mr Watson was invited to be present but maintained the consistent attitude which he has occupied from the beginning he stated that he had no relations with the unions in their organized capacity nor did he consider it proper t that h at he should have his business was in a nother another direction if they wanted to discuss the position he had taken they were fully informed as to what it was that he employed men not dot because they were members of any union but because they were skilled workmen he paid them good wages in some instances higher than union prices and endeavored to t treat rea t all fairly but he did not propose to say to those who had either severed their c connection with the union or had never been members that unless they joined he would discharge them such a course he considered would be nothing less than an outrage upon workingmen who had families to support and would be an infringement upon personal liberty such as no circumstances would justify mr sleater had bad said to him that some of the nonunion non don union men had spoken disrespectfully of the union but mr watson said he could not consistently interfere with a man for expressions that were probably made in the heat of discussion As to the meeting but little could be ascertained of what was done as the proceedings were not public it was stated by some however that the session was rather stormy and that about half of those who had gone out under the orders of the union protested ro tested against the action of that g ody body as an unjust and arbitrary exercise of power the force on zions savings bank building which is to be made six stories was waa about ene fourth of that usually employed several good stonecutters applied for and were granted work and it is likely that in a few days a sufficient number will be on hand to meet all requirements in the meantime the matter is being discussed by the union men who may see on careful reflection that they have reached beyond the limits of that which is right and just and modify their action so that differences may be am amicably settled |
