Show mississippi conference i jackson mississippi january 18 1898 tile convening of the mississippi conference ference to Is now a happy event of the past all of our dear brethren W are still with us though some are 35 months old in the mission missionary axy service our dur pop conference ference was in many respects one or of the most ever held in the int mealon sion and aad one which will be far inching hula and lasting in its effects upon the good people of this t and d elsewhere usque because the first if we are tightly tichey informed ever held in a capital atty bofty of one of the greatest states of the wo south and at a time when the legisla ure and 10 the federal court were in thus bringing us faced face to face with many of the representative men of toe the state and nation a fair number of whom attended our every elvery service ulder elder cimball with his five years experience peri ence in the mission remarked that four ow thee meetings tings were attended by a number of prominent and rep ballve men than any other in his lence in the south jy 44 when an it was waa announced in the newspapers of jackson that the mormons cormons were to hold their conference in the robinson opera house in the capital alty january and 1898 and wax at there would be assembled forty two elders and representatives of the W 0 members in the state and that we would be favored with a visit by b elam Q lyman leraan and cowley of the council of the twelve and elder kimball of the southern mission a sentiment of astonishment swept over the state some of the papers jocosely expressed it as terrible hardship for jackson to care for both conventions others denominated the mormon conference as a rival attraction of the legislature the jackson papers playfully responded that the city could take care of both the legislature and the mormon conference and cared not for the sympathy expressed the mayor mr wharton kindly opened the doors of the city to us guaranteeing the protection of the municipality nici gov mclaurin and the legislature extended every courtesy to the visiting brethren that could be expected and if there was any disturbance of the sea of good will it was not visible on the surface at 10 am saturday morning january our conference began its it session in the robinson opera house there being present elders I 1 P M lyman and M F cowley of the council of apostles elder E S kimball and forty one elders and about thirty saints representatives of the twelve branches in the state as well as aa a goodly number of visitors who desirous no doubt of knowing if any good could come out of nazareth there were also present reporters of four of the leading newspapers of the south some of the people ea pae e to scorn but as of old remained to pray for when the chorus of sixty voices rang through the circles of the neat little opera house their curiosity was changed to wonderment at the thrilling beauty of such spiritual hymns and when elder lyman with his face lit up by the spirit of god his words of testimony and inspiration rolling forth as scintillations from a burning flame they ceased to wonder and deeply of the truth tor for i he spoke not an aa the scribes but as one having authority the faith that saves the mission of the prophet joseph smith and the great latter day work were portrayed in glowing pictures before the now eager assemblage at 3 pm a much larger audience us and elder M F cowley kindled to a higher degree the desire to know by a sermon on the glory of the latter day work its teachings and position before the world pointing out the similarity of its faith doctrines gifts authority and organization to the burch church of christ established in the days of the apostles sunday morning at 10 am elder E S kimball kemball keep Us in the perfect way for where there to is no vision the people perish at 3 pm elder lyman again addressed the large gathering reviewing the history of the church pointing out some of her distinctive features the obligations her members take upon themselves showed that the work of the lord was growing and that the Latt erday saints today were strongly ence were of no little importance hlat aliat established and in numbers and influence were of no little importance throughout the land he invited ministers of all denominations to visit utah assuring them of a welcome a church to preach in and as fine an audience as can be found i in the world elder cowley addressed the largest gathering of the conference at p m making plain some of the great truths of the gospel in contradistinction to the erroneous ideas of the world A splendid impression was made upon the people many expressions of praise commendation and admiration were made by legislators and others and the visiting brethren were invited to visit the houses of the legislature and the governors office which the chev did one old baptist brother said ca T have never before seen a nicer body of men he was especially impressed with elder lyman 1 I believed every word that man uttered he spoke as aa one having authority and is reliable the press of the city also gave us a very fair write up and we extend
