This became apparent last week as a few dead coots and ducks showed up in our main collection canal and springs. cause of this we have started a limited grain (barley) feeding program to assist our wintering birds during this time of extreme hunger. We have had some barley stored here just for this purpose. We have hauled out two loads which has been spread at strategic locations, Canada geese were the first to find the grain, then tundra swans and dudes. Hopefully we will get some warmer weather which will thaw out some of our large A ! wintering birds. Our waterfowl population has stayed about the same the last few weeks. Currently we have 800 Canada geese, 72 tundra swans, 4,200 ducks and 1,500 coots. We have obd served 5 hawks, numerous northern harriers and a lone barn owl. At night we are usually serenaded by 6 coyotes! Thats it for this week from the outback. rough-legge- 3-- M 3to |
