J" . y ' "' , , Mertdiola takes over as Headquarters Co First Sergeant The : lSgt Bernardo R.L Mendiola (pronounced took the reigns as First Sergeant of Headquarters and Headquarters Company Monday, Feb. 5 with little fanfare. Mendiola, 42, officially, took the chair vacated in Jan uarry by lSgt. Larry Washburn who was transferred to Min-dee-ol- a) ti ti Germany. In the interim, the duties have been shared by SFC Don Goff, and SFC John Hayes, both of whom are glad to see the new First Sergeant arrive. Mendiola Was drafted into the Army in March, 1964 from his home in Agana, Guam and took basic at Ft. Ord, California before attending Advanced Individual Training in MOS 11B Infantryman at Ft. Lewis, Washington. He spent four years in assignments with training committees at Ft. Lewis and Ft. Ord and was shipped to Hawaii to organize a unit there in 1966. December 7, 1966 brought a sneak attack as he was shipped out for his first of two tpurs in Vietnam on that day. A return to Ft. Lewis brought a rest between the Prior to his present assignment, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. Among the new First Sergeant's awards are the Combat infantrymans Badge (CIB), the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medals. is a geographical bachelor, his wife. Mendiola has several goals here, one is to remind the. troops that they are first and foremost soldiers in the United States Army. He wants them to look and act as such at all times. A second msyor area of emphasis is on physical condi-- , tioning, as that is the clear direction the army is leaning at present. Another thing the new enlisted leader of HHC wants to do is increase and improve communication between the Company, the supervisors and the soldiers assigned here. ' "I think, from my observations in my first three weeks, that we have a good caliber of personnel here," Mendiola added, "I feel that we have a little work to do to mold them into professional soldiers, but I know they can do it. In 1978 he was reassigned to the Chemical School and participated in the move of that school to Ft. McLellan, Alabama.
