Protection and Prevention or ' . . .- - to preserve and protect our freedom, and thoughtful enough to promote lasting peace throughout the world. President Ronald Reagan "Every Memorial Day we pause to reflect on those men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. The significance of what they gave to us is clearly apparent as we look at many nations today, whose people are denied the most basic liberties, and for whom justice is only a dream. For more than two centuries, many Americans have guarded our freedom, often with their lives, in tribute to them this Memorial Day, brightly colored flowers will be placed by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, among the white rows of grave markers in military cemeteries, and on the final resting places in cities and . "On this Memorial Day and every other day, we are inspired by the gallantry of those who have fallen in the service of this country. We can pay them no greater honor than to cherish that sacred legacy of freedom, and to make clear we are committed to its preservation, whatever the cost. Casper W. Weinberger Secretary of Defense -- Every year since 1868, Americans have set aside one day in Memorial Day to demonstrate gratitude to those May who have died preserving our freedom. In the 1 16 years since then 625,000 Americans have fallen in five major wars and conflicts. Since the birth of our nation, 1,153,000 Americans have given their lives for their country. Obviously, the magnitude of our debts to these men and women is considerable. The cost of freedom is high. It is a measure of the greatness of the United.Btates that there have always been gallant Americans, who have stepped forward to pay the price of preserving dor way of life. These men and women made the supreme sacrifice out of patriotism, and they expectedho repayment. Yet we would be an ungrateful people indeed if we did not show our ' appreciation. We can repay them by nurturing the gift they gave arid by passing it on to fiiture generations, by living for those ideals for which they died, and by being the loyal and patriotic Americans they expected us to be. That is our covenant with the dead we honor on Memorial Day. We in TECOM and throughout the Department of the Army have a unique opportunity to honor these Americans. By performing our mission well, we serve and support Americas soldiers me direct successors of those we honor on Memorial Day. For our war dead; that is the greatest act of . Ranch in Dave Bagievs . non-returnab- Memorial Day is the time to take stock of the present, reflect on the past, and renew commitment to the future of America.".,. .Today, as in the past, there are problems that must be solved and challenges that must be met. We can tackle them with our full strength and creativity only because we are free to work them out in our own way. We owe this freedom of choice and action to those men and women in uniform who have served this nation and its interests in time of need. In particular, we are forever indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free. I dont have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world. This Memorial Day of 1983, we honor those brave Americans who died in the service of their country. I think an ancient scholar put it well when he wrote: "Let us now praise famous men . . all these were honored in their generation, and were the glory of their times. Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name Uveth for evermore. As a tribute to their sacrifice, let us renew our resolve to remain strong enough to deter aggression, wise enough Dining RoomOasis Club UpstairsOasis Club Skeet Range Dining RoomOasis Club Dining RoomOasis Club Behind Oasis Club .
