The Architectural Digest ? x The newest magazine at the Library is the Architectural Digest. This elegant magazine is a visual joy. It is beautifully photographed and the accompanying articles are descriptive without being overly wordy. Of particular interest to desert dwellers, is the article on the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hart W. Empie of Carefree, Arizona. Designed by New Mexico architect, Charles Foreman Johnson, the home was built using existing rock formations and adobe brick. The housing was built on a ten acre plot of ground on the Arizona desert. The total effect of the house is one of harmony with the environment and the best possible use of the building site. to create hallways Natural passages in the rock were-useand rooms within the rock formation. When the Empies decided to have a fireplace built, excavations revealed an ancient fire pit in the spot they had chosen. Architectural Digest provides the opportunity for many to , enjoy the best in architecture, landscape and interior design The magazine allows the leisurely examination of the the outstanding in homes and beautiful, the expensive apd ' environment. d , , , To mark his fiftieth anniversary as a science fiction writer,. L. Ron Hubbard has released his new book. Battlefield. This monsterous work of over 800 pages, introduces us to the Earth in the year 3000. The planet, for the.last thousand years, has been ruled by the mining world of Psychlos, whose inhabitants look somewhat like ten foot Saint Bernards that walk on their hind legs, breathe ammonia gas, and get drunk on kerbango. Although there are only small pockets of humans left, Jonnie Goodboy Tyler of the Rocky Mountains decides it's time to overthrow those tyrannical aliens and start civilization all over again. Together with a band of hardy, surviving Scotsmen, lyier sets out to do the impossible, surmounting all obstacles with good old American ingenuity and hard work. Aside form the obvious puns and unbelievable story line, Hubbard does make many of the escapades feasible, but with novels of this length and type, discrepancies do arise. There is, also, ttie wish that perhaps the author should have quit after the first 400 pages, since the rest seems like an attempt to reach a projected number of words irregardless of subject matter (much like a book review). . On the whole, though, this science fiction work is enjoyable, ' and SF aficionados who like the simple, straight forward approach, without an abundance of technical, intricate will be especially pleased with Hubbard's v explanations effort.
