Show Telephone service (Continued from front page) still are busy, the caller is so informed and given the opportunity of continuing to hold or calling back in a short time. The typical FLCL communique is short, lasting about '10 minutes. We dont try to solve any problems, Syrles explains, only to put the caller in touch with those who can solve them. What we do basically is help them get started on a solution to their own problems. Callers are told what resources and services are available first at the local installation level to assist the family with the problem. Where applicable, civilian human resource services are cited also. Callers are referred to higher commands only after' exhausting all avenues at their local command levels, We work first with the commanders," Surles stressed. All FLCL cases are recorded on a daily call sheet to allow for later evaluation and records keeping. 'Subjects of cases are listed under several heading family matters, personnel maters, logistics, medical, entitlements, benefits, resources and the Army family development program. Most cases are handled during one telephone conversation between the caller and an FLCL counselor; others require several telephone exchanges to resolve the problem. The family tance branch has no way of knowing what happens after closing the case, since there is no follow-u- p on any1 of the cases. We assume that our callers follow through on the recommendations we offer," explains Surles, noting that the FLCL was set up to disseminate information and give referrals. But we always leave the door open for feedback or for future help." - c . the FLCL continues to refine its mission; Surles hopes the telephone service will amass sufficient information and statistics to plot trends and define issues which can help the Army determine As future policies and programs for families. So far, the family assistance branch has noted with interrt of est the number of calls involving soldier members absent by dependent family parents. Recently, Surles branch began handling queries received at the White House on Army family issues. When one Army wifes letter to the President ended up in Surles office, the family assistance branch was able to provide an immediate telephonic answer to the family members query, thereby speeding up the formal response time for usual White Howe correspondence. During its early stages, some confusion existed about the functions of the communications line. Surles notes that many calls received on the FLCL came from soldiers involving assignments and other personnel questions outside their charter. .All we could do was give them the telephone number to their MOS career field and tell them to use the chain of command, she said. The novelty surrounding the FLCL has finally begun to wear and people know better now what it is we do here. But wed never turn off anyone with a problem. The Army has resources to help them and we want people to know about them."
