Show c THE SAMPLER IPT Qveir-4- 0 ftvSI!Y!IaiTvWliitlv ARNEWS Assoc. Editor . The Army is taking its . Ever since the first faceoff, hockey has been a sport known for its to find either party guilty, plus fisticuffs. There are many ways to describe sometimes the game. Its animalistic. fluent, artistic, graceful, Animalistic? That has been one of the most colfn-mo- n terms used in recent history because of owners and coaches who still think that hockey games should be won by the fist rather than by putting the puck in the net. Last week, I was in St. Louis for.a newspaper seminar and one of the nights that I had off I decided to take in a game. Now, this was my first NHL game live. I had been to Indianpolis Racer games while the World Hockey League was still in existence but their way of hockey really didnt leave me with much satisfaction. Anyhow, back to the game. The St. Louis Blues were playing against the Hartford Whalers in what turned out to be a very good game. One thing bothered me though. After only two minutes were played in the first period two players got into and the fans a minor altercation wild! went They were actually cheering for them to continue and when the referees began to intervene they started to boo and shout insults. Both players received five minute penalties for fighting and the rest of the game went on. There was a lot of good badychecking but no other Bouche eventually played again in the NHL. Another team known for its overaggressiveness in the Seventies was the Philadelphia Flyers, also known as the Broadstreet Bullies. At this time they had players who really had no talent other than to fight. He was used to take take out the opponents best player by inducing them into a brawl. One time I saw a game between the Flyers and the Montreal Canadians that ended with each teaiq having fast-pace- d, . fights. ground for whether or not hockey violence could be prosecuted by law. The case ended in a hung jury because none of the jurors really wanted three skaters per side aiid their goalies. All the other players had been kicked out of the game for an all-obrawl which lasted close to a half hour. But, by getting the opposing teams best goal scorer out of the .game it made it easier for the Flyers to win. Player cut for not fightin Not more than three weeks ago a player was cut by his team because he would not go on the ice to fight when his coach ordered him to. Paul Mulvey, a newly acquired leftwinger, told his coach' Don Perry of the Los Angeles Kings that he wouldnt go out and take part in a fight just for the fun of it. Stating that he wasnt somebodys goon and the day he became one hed retire. For this Mulvey was placed on waivers. Club officials said that it had nothing to do with him not wanting to fight. They said he was just being used until several King players got healthy. (I believe that about as much as I be- lieve Magic Johnson had nothing to do with Paul Westheads firing earlier this year. Funny, the same man owns both teams!) I am not an advocate of fighting but then again Im no stick in the mud either. A fight in a game has its good points, but most are detrimental to the game. Players that go into the stands after fans though should be punished. A fan inherits several rights when-- , he pays to see a game and one of them is to say what he wants. Once this exceeds words however the fan should be held liable for his actions. ut : . . First case goes to trial About nine years ago in a game between the Boston Bruins and the Minnesota North Stars a fight broke out between the Bruins Dave Forbes and the North Stars Henri Bouche.' Both players had already been sent to the penalty box once in that game but when they got back on the ice they decided to finish their quarrel. Forbes used his stick on his adversary, catching him in the eye which sent Bouche to the ice, bleeding. Bouche, after being cleaned up said that he was seeing everything double.' To the people of Minnesota this, was an outrage. They demanded that something be done to Forbes for the incident.
