Got two calls from people thanking me for rapping these inconsiderate people. I also got a call saying that the car that skidded over the tank had slick tires, that it wasnt the fault of the car following too close. I thanked the folks at AV for the fine job they have been doing for such a long time, and cited the Dr. Rothen-ber- g farewell. I got two calls from others who had worked on that project wondering why they had not been thanked - thanks. I FIND lists of things fascinating. A list of societies caught my eye the other day. As judges for the Army, they will select up to three outstanding winners who will each receive Bronze Medallions and Certificates of Achievement. Projects will be evaluated on the quality of work done by the student and how well the student understands the project and the area of study. Areas of consideration in the judging include creativeness, scientific thought, engineering goals. ex-trein- . John Pratt, a Dugway High School junior and son of Mr. and Mrs. Vic Pratt, has been chosen to represent Dugway at a regional science symposium at the University of Utah from March 25-2- 8. The research paper which John prepared, analyzes problems he had in integrating systems when he built a robot. The robot was designed and built by John using trial and error. Pratts objective was to design and construct a robot that would move under its own power and which had arms and hands that would function similar to those of a human. In construction of his robot Pratt was limited to simple tools, using a drill, screwdriver, hammer, and soldering iron; He discovered that problems occurred when simple mechanical and electrical systems were combined to make a working system. His paper deals with some of the problems encountered and the solutions he came up with. Five students from the regional symposium will attend the national symposium at West Point and from there, five students are selected to represent the United States at the international symposium London, England. On retrospect Ron Dolle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Dolle, as a high school junior in 1973, won regional and then national science symposium recognition. Of the 32 presentations at the national symposium at West Point, Dolle received the most votes to re- present the United States at the International Science Symposium in London, England. He spent two weeks at the University of London .and 28 nations were represented there with 140 selected papers, of the 140 papers only two were selected to be presented - Dolles was one of the two. Dolles eight-mon- th project included the isolation and practical application of sagebrush oil. The essential oil of sagebrush was extracted by steam distillation in Dolles home laboratory vHe found that the oil, after many experiments, was a highly effective insecticide, larvicide, insect repellant, bactericide, and fungicide. Since DDT was. banned from use in the United States, the development of sagebrush oil was considered .a possible substitution. According to Mrs. Dolle, the project is still being studied todav at the University of Utah. Dolle is now working on his doctorate in organic chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. |
