Show a Page 3 THE DESERET SAMPLER, Friday, June 13, 1980 Barbara Beringer finds Bee Center a challenge (Editors note: The Recreation Center, in the TODAY, Beringer says the Rec Centers still carry around the stigma of being a Service club and people such as the older NCOs shy away from them because of it. To combat this feeling, the Tacoma, WA native has been changing the atmosphere of the place to conform more to how. people might decorate their . own homes. past, wm a dace where young troops could go to have a good time. It was a bar, disco and games palace all rolled into one. But times are and so is the Rec Center. Below, Barbarachanging, discusses Beringer how these changing attitudes have affected her job.) Barbara Beringer has had to adjust to many . things. Weve been hanging up plants, laying down THE Dugway Recreation Center supervisor has been in a . rugs and generally moving towards the feeling that the Rec Center can be a sort of home away from home." foreign country, lived on army bases near big and small towns and catered strictly to the needs of single men and women. Now, Beringer has to adjust all over again. At Dugway, she is not only dealing with single and married couples but doing it in a very Mated area where the closest town is 40 miles distant. TIIE situation presents new problems. Because Dugway is a small community, they are pretty much set in their ways concerning leisure activities. So Beringer finds herself competing with long standing programs to draw crowds. This is the first time its ever happened to me,-shadmits. Everyone is either bowling, playing bingo or involved in some sort of athletic sport. So Ive had to become accustomed to when and what time all these other things take place." ALONG with the change in atmosphere, Beringer says she will also be providing some of in her other the programs that were well-receiv- - ed jobs. Although peoples attitudes are different, she contends, you have to go with your successful material to begin drawing a crowd. After that.you can gauge your people's interest and try something new. Most of the activities Beringer plans to present are what she calls special programs, or things that are done maybe once or twice a month. WHEN I first arrived here, she begins, there were a few regular activities like the Friday-nigdiscos, but nothing really out of the ordinary." One of her programs calls for a wine and cheese festival which went over big at Ft. Lewis, she says, for a number of reasons. Drinking wine was one of them, she admits. But we also looked into wine tastings background and found a very interesting history. IN JULY, Beringer says shed like to get towives to cook some gether a group of foreign-bor- n native dishes for everyone to sample.. Other programs in the works are the assemb- - e - BUT Beringer admits these scheduling conflicts as large as the problem of drawing people to the programs shes worked hard to implement. She knows, however, that its been the plight of most Rec Center supervisors. It all started when the Centers were called Service Clubs, she recalls. They would have things going on all the time. But six or seven years ago people became more independent and wanted to choose what they felt like doing." I STILL grit my teeth, get sweaty palms and pray alot when its opening night for a particular program. But now I dont blame myself when the turnout isnt what I expected. Though the budget is adequate here for the size of the post, I still sit back sometimes and wonder how it would be at a large post. But I remember that I got lost in the shuffle because people could go to town anytime they wanted. Here, they cant do that and its a challenge to keep them interested. But its going to take quite awhile before people finally say, Lets go to the Rec Center regardless of whether theres anything to do or not. 3 Decontamination kits M-- 1 Barbara Beringer Shrine Circus tickets on News Briefs dangerous The Recreation Center is currei.tly selling tickets to the Shrine Circus, which will be held at the Salt Palace June 27-2- 8 and at Ogden Stadium June 30 between 2 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.
