One thing we have noticed is there is a lack of flying and crawling insects. We have refrained from driving for an entire week due to the fact the dust particles enter the breather causing engine wear. There is concern about automatic transmissions also. Wear will probably be excessive cm wheel bearings brakes, etc. Last night we experienced a significant rain. May 25, which in turn caused a power outage because the adi shorted out the electrical wires. It lasted 13 hours. But the rain was welcomed with open arms. SCHOOL was closed for a week and many businesses closed due to BEfcO.REfAND - (Editor's Note: Hits is a letter sent to the Public Affairs Office by Mr. . and Mrs. George McAlpin. Because George was with Plans and Pro- grams here, and because Mt. St. Helens is a national event, we thought it might be of. some interest.) If wc can get the ashes off us long enough, wed like to tell you of our - . latest adventure. AT 9 A.M. Sunday morning May 18. Kevin and George decided not to make a trip to Ticton because in the far distance they could see a huge - black thundercloud heading our - s a Ar is V .. Ht Between the two eruptions we had few minutes of gray haze and saw a that everything was literally covered with ash. About 7 p.m. there was a distinct red glow as night darkness ap- proached. All during this time there was tremendous thunder and light- ening bolts but no rain. We were be- ginning to think it was all a bad dream but when we awoke in the morning under 34 inches of ash we realized it was true. Since that time wehave not received any new ash ash that is circulating- but well-use- d the country side by wind power. WE BEGAN our clean-u- p effort by washing trees, shrubs, lawn, gar- - ing ash. the cloud came over our area it was like pulling a black curtain eastward until all the light was gone, As A.M. it was absolutely and they were advising black pitch BY 10 people to remain inside until the chemical analysis of the ash could lie determined. You can just imagine den and sidewalk. Contrary to what you might believe this ash has a heavy sandy base and a light dust as well as various degrees of particles. We felt it was important to get the heavy material off the trees and plants; however no one knew at this point really what to do. But after do- ing this for four days we decided the roof will have priority next time, The wind has been blowing almost constantly causing not only a dust film outside but inside as well. But then if we didnt have something to do to save our sanity we would all go crazy. THE garden has survived so far but only time will tell. The same is . wliat a peculiar. feeling we were experiencing for the next few hours being in total darkness during the middle of the day. Very eerie. It was a type of darkness that can be described as black and dense giving , can eJTot1 this year in the face of renewed chal- - and aggressive support modernireadiness, the Army achieve it zation and sustainability requires to accomplish successfully its demanda ing responsibilities in threatening world. The suspense date (1 June 1980) for the return of the ballot gives the Air Force no time to s come acquainted with the now ing list of nominees, nor are they be-ing given the opportunity to have a nominee of their own choosing placed on the ballot. The only way this ballot shows consideration for the Air Force is under the listing of Appointed Representatives where the 6501st is mentioned. Either they are considered part of this community or they are not, it seems to me that we are already committed. It is hard enough being a civilian on this post where the Army has first priority, without the Community Activities Office generating tially hard feelings with the Air Force before they are even here. I believe they are entitled to their say Today I received a ballot for the Community Club Advisory Council, I strongly feel that this ballot is not in the best interest of the community a whole: The following reasons my belief: a. There was no (that I am aware of) previous voting for the nomination of delegates. b. The first three areas of selection total eight military, note there are no civilians even listed. The fourth area seems to be all civilians but you can only vote for six. This leaves the Army with acceptanceor veto power for the decision making, therefore, the dub would still be an Army club and not a Community Club. c. I do not understand why the are being asked to vote on a community subject. True, they work here but they dont live here. I believe that a voter should be a resident of the community for which the ballot is for. I also believe that the commuters should be included in the functions and activities of the Club but as invited guests of the community, after all, they really dont care how' we live out' heYeOr they would . Such a procedure should go a long way towards estab- lishing some control over rumors, clearing up problems and providing one with better feedback. If I were Post Commander: I would try to set up a real park in the area that was once Fries Trailer Park. There are a lot of beautiful trees that are dying because nobody cares for them. This park could make a great family picnic area or' special events area. Answer: We are looking at Fries Park to determine what, within our means, cab be done with the area. Dugway needs both a picnic area and a campground. Perhaps it will prove feasible to use Fries Park for one or both of these. |
