Records indicate that some 13 Buffalo Soldiers were awarded die Medal of Honor during die Indian campaigns, 1865 1891. -- Black SoVjerin The American West has fascinated people all over the world since settlers first crossed die Mississippi River to start new lives. The tales of Indian wars, gold rushes and wagon trains 'have been told in pulp novels, scrioufliterature, movies, Wild West shwws, and cm television. However, an area often neglected was the role played by die 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments and the 24th ami 25th the so called Buffalo Soldiers the black Infantry Regiments soldiers following die Civil War who served on the western plaisn. The nickname Buffalo Soldiers is believed to have been given die 'troops by the Indians who compared the Negros hair with that of the buffalo. Also during die winter the troops wore coats made from buffalo hides, which heightened the image. 9-1- 6 the Chaplains assistant. I am the Chaplains assistant, may I help you? A lot of people are currently finding themselves in this same situation. This is the first time here at Dugway that a woman has filled the position as an assistant to the Chaplain. THE NEW ENLISTED woman working at the Chapel is Private (2) Aljean J. Hatfield, who has been assigned to Chaplain (Capt.) A1 Skinner. Ms. Hatfield, bom March 7, 1956 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, moved to Salt Lake City at an early age. In Salt Lake she attended Monroe Elementary, Westlake Jr. High, and graduated from West High in June 1974. 1 wanted to continue my education after I graduated but due to financial difficulties I couldnt attend college, stated Aljean. After checking out different avenues I might take, I decided to join die Army. This would help me out along the lines of educational benefits plus giving me a chance to serve my country. ALJEAN COMPLETED basic training at Ft. Jackson, So. Carolina and then went to Ft. Wadsworth, N.Y., for eight weeks of train ing at the Chaplain's Assistant School. This is the field I wanted to get into. Ive always lieen active in church affairs and I like the contact with the people in this area. Asked what she thought of Dugway, she stated, I really like it here. The. post is small enough that you dont get lost in the crowd like you do at the larger installations. I'm close enough to Salt Lake so I can see my family and friends on my days off. The petite, green-eyebrown haired EW plans to get married in April. Asked who the lucky guy was, die said, Tie is an MP stationed at Ft. Hamilton, N.Y. We met while . 1 was back east attending Chaplain's School. d, I WANT TO get out after my three years are up and raise a family. Im as old fashioned .as they come. Even though I am an Enlisted Woman, I'm still a woman. I don't consider myself a liber and I never will. I feel the Army is a good career field but I dont think you can mix a career and raising a family if you are a woman. With the addition of Pvt. Hatfield to the Chaplains office, another first has taken place at DPG. February Aint Heavy He by James Higdon Pre-blaHistory week at Dugway has seen itself concerned with exploring die theme of the program, Fulfilling Americas de Promise. The questions raised by the theme are followed by more questions, positive action, suid discussion by all races. HOW DOES black History solve the problem? Arent you interested in your fellow American regardless of his pigmentation? And as interest sparks the query, Who is Crispin Attucks? It is still answered somewhere in the fog with another question, Who Cares?" You wont alter the effects of 200 years of suppression in a single day or two, said SP5 Milton brooks of Military Personnel. But die struggle to build a better America does not rest with any single race. We are one Nation of many peoples. Brooks, other Dugway Blacks, a young Race Relations officer, and this American community are at once participants and spectators in Fulfilling America's Promise. RECENTLY PFC Alford Rentie of HHC, and a small group of white soldiers from the same company met in die troop doling facility to discuss the usual: Dugway in general. When the topic of Black History came up one of die soldiers spoke out. Its simple. They arent treated as equals here and they irent treated as equals anywhere. This is why Black History is needed. From that topic die conversation quickly swung to Black pride, hurt feelings, Daps, Honkvs, and black blood spilt for White America. Even lSGTs James Sullivan of HHC, and SFC Lordine Brewer of the Health Clinic Detachment spoke up. How many blacks have layed down their lives for America?-askSullivan, who sees Blade History week as an awareness week, geared toward all races. Brewer would like to see more material and data about Black History available to everyone. IN PROMOTING Black History and Black awareness here, will feature discussion Hade History week February 6 groups, and poster's around Dugway which give Historical nets, and help in telling die Black story. The day has come when black and white alike refuse to be hemmed in by boundaries, comment .Brooks, who has been personally active in preparations for Dugway s Blade History week program. The promise is there, says PV-- 2 Willfe Wyatt of the Motor Pool. Laws will change, and with diem attitudes. . s . BUSY, Pvt Hatfield is the first Enlisted Woman to work as at the Post Chapel.
