Show Congress enacts Fire protection survivor benefits Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) enacted by Congress has replaced the Retired Servicemans Family Protection Plan for personnel now on active duty. The new law is designed to provide a fair level of income replacement for survivors of retired military personnel. It calls for a cost sharing program at a reasonable level by retirees and the government, and is easier to understand then the old plan. THE RSFPP was rejected by many because of its high cost and restrictive and inflexible A SSStJEF3 2"' provisions. A serviceman can enter the SBP as soon as he retires. The SBP provides for a survivor annuity of up to 55 per as fc k cent of retired pay. SERVICE MEMBERS within 60 days of retirement will be counseled regarding the program, and may elect to participate at a lesser amount. However, if they desire to participate to the maximum, they need take no action, SBP coverage will be automatic. Those choosing to elect out of die program, or those desiring less than the 55 per cent annuity, or those wishing to elect a person of natural insurable interest as beneficiary, will indicate their preference on DD form 1883 (SBP Election Certificate). Faster response key to agreement This should be done 30 to 60 days before retirement. SERVICE MEMBERS without a spouse or dependent children will be counseled regarding their option to select some near relative as beneficiary for die plan. Active duty, retired, or reserve component personnel who for urgent personal or medical reasons need to elect immediately, can make a simple written statement of their election and forward it to Commanding General, US Army Finance Support Agency ATTN: Retired Pay DiIndiana, vision, Indianapolis, 46249, by registered mail. This statement should include foil name, rank, and service number, whether or not they desire to participate in the SBP, and the dollar amount of the annuity the beneficiary is to receive (which cannot exceed 55 per cent of full retired pay). The beneficiaries should be listed with age and relationships, if any. THE STATEMENT should be dated and signed by the service member and a witness. Dependent children only may' be elected as beneficiaries, or spouses and dependent children. Only one election can be made; that decision is valid and binding.
