Show rT I 1 'HHv Pi i The DESERET SAMPLER, Fri., Feb. 5, 1971 Students break job barriers with new DHS education program Dugway High Sch(l stuare now participating in a new vocational training program that has recently lieen initiated at the school. Under the new Cooperative Education Program, the students work directly with a supervisor and receive training to perforin certain tasks with relationship to their respective areas of interest. While participating in the program, the students receive no salary whatsoever for their work ami are also no expense to their supervisors. They must provide any required tools, uniforms, or other means that are essential for their training. Thirty-tw- o dents Shorthand skills uator, lie will receive one hour of credit for each hour spent in the training program per day. For example, if he worked two hours per day, he will receive two credits for the semester. In order to participate in the program, the students must exhibit a willingness to learn, punctuality, courtesy, and proper honesty, cooperativeness, health and grooming habits. He must also conform to the rules and regulations of the training station. The student learner must also maintain regular attendance in school and on the job. The student's training will not lie limited however to the actual working area. As the visits the training station for oliscrvation, he carefully notes the student's progress and weaknesses, and then later discusses these things in related classroom teacher-coordinat- OBJECTIVES The primary olijectives of the new program are: (1) To develop the social skills and work attitudes and habits necessary for job tenure or entry into other vocational training programs. (2) To develop a viable career plan liased on realistic self appraisal and accurate occupational information. (3) To develop a combination vocational competencies that enable graduates to advance more rapidly in a satisfying career. After being envisioned last the Cooperative Education Program has been developed by a central committee of high school faculty memliers and administration. The memliers" include Don Wade, Myrna Ellison, Marilyn Steve Morgan and LaVaun Riggs-Iaddition. Col. diaries M. Shadle, DPC Commander, and Maj. James Ault, Executive Officer, worked together with the committee to seek positions for the students and to help develop the program into reality. Major James Ault, DPC executive officer, dictates another letter to Jean Shirts, Dugway Iligh School senior, as she works and trains in the Cooperative Education Program. Shorthand and other secretarial skills are just some of the tasks that the students perform in their daily training sessions. Shoppers gel coupons o.k.'cd well-lnilanc- Chief Warrant Officer (CW3) Delliert West of the Dugway Commissary Store announced this week that the commissary is now accepting merchandise coupons for items stocked at the Dugway store. The Department of the Army decided to accept coupons at certain commissaries on a trial basis through June 30, 1971. Mr. West noted though, that the Army Materiel Command wanted all its commissary stores to begin accepting the coupons. , Hilde-bran- - Coupons d, CLASS CREDIT In addition to the actual experience gained by the student while working with the supervisor and faculty may lie found certain items at the store, in magazines, newspapers, or received through the mail. The Purchasers may redeem coupons only when the item to which the coupon applies is on JOB POSITIONS Some of the positions in which the students are working include licensed practical nurses, dental assistant, teaching assistants at the elementary school, secretarial training, carpentry training, machine shop training, and motor and equipment maintenance. Students currently enrolled in the Cooperative Education Program include Faye Taylor, Barliara Palmer, Kogena Keck, Vickie Miller. Lucille Hoard, Denise Capcl, Linda Norton, Cathy Wilde, Jackie Anderton, Dixie Argyle, Tonya Bailer, Kathy Gonzales, Rosalind Livingston, Jean Shirts, Julie Sa-luit- o, Special instruction and directions by adult supervisors represent one of the founding blocks of the Cooperative Education Program. Kathy Austin busily works at the calculator as she receives secretarial training in the Management Analysis Branch.
