Show Tlie DESERET SAMPLER, Fri., Oct. 10, 1909 Hank No. 3 Vi Mustangs Shine In Region Grid Mustangs Down Trojans Lead Region With 0 Mark 2-- . The Dugway Mustangs made it two in a row in Region play last Friday afternoon when they downed the score on the losers home South Rich Trojans by a 36-1- 4 field. The Mustangs got off to a 6-- 0 lead with four minutes gone in the first quarter and were never headed as they led 12-- 6 at half time and a 18 point third quarter put the game out of reach of the Trojans. After holding the losers following the opening kickoff, the Mustangs drove 71 yards in 10 plays for the first touchdown with fullltack Eddie Owens going over from the one yard line for the score. Halfback Dean Daniel, who ran for 174 yards during the afternoon set up the score with an 11 yard dash to the one. The point after try was no good. But He Got A Bum Rap Dick Williams could and a con artist he ain't! never make it as a politician. . . The departed Huston Hed So manager took over the hchn u the Cardiac Kids in 1967 and made them 100 to 1 long shot winners. He made a superstar out of Carl Yastriumski. a national pitching star out of Jim Umlmrg. and developed such stars us Itico Ietrocelli, Mike Andrews, llcggie Smith and George Scott. The Yankees' Kulph llouk brought his team in fifth place and he got a new three year contract. Williams, who hud another year to go in his $50,000 contract, signed two seasons ago, brought the Hed Sox in third despite the fact that they had a crippled pitching staff yet he gets the axe! Sox owner Tom Yawkey says that Dick no longer lias what it takes. Well, although I hate to go aginst Mr. Yawkey whom I respect as the greatest owner in the game todav, troops, Dick Williams is taking a bum rap. True the warmth of Williams personality sometimes left something to be desired and he is about as flexible as a stick of uncooked spaghetti. But, how many guys can you name who have ever made a 100 to 1 shot pennant winners and packed in a phconomcnal 5.3 million screaming fans in a comparatively small and outdated hall park? 1 interviewed Dick Williams once while I was stationed at Ft. Lewis (a tape I hud visions of making niuclio diucro on next year). He was very frank in that interview and dodged no questions. At the time the Hed Sox were playing Seattle and Boston had just sent Billv C. (Tony Conigliaro's brother) back to the minors. Billy C. Hud lieen the talk of the league and was hitting .311. Said Williams, "I hated to see the guy go but he has to play everyday and with Carl, Reggie and Tony that meant playing at Louisville (Sox farm club) at least for a while." He smiled and said, You know Billy will probably hate me for this but I honestly believe that this added experience will make him a suicrstar some day. Billy and his hrollicr never did forgive Williams nor has Yas whom Williams publicly critixed for not hustling. Yastrzemski is a great hall plaver but his problem is he thinks so too. Of all the Red Sox I interviewed he was by far the most spoiled buhy. And troops this is where the real problem is. You see, Carl Yastrzemski is Tom Y'awkeys little lioy just as Ted Williams was years ago. Most of the lull club publicly expressed regret at the firing of Williams. Of course there were Yas. the Conigs and George Scott (Williams lamclicd him last summer liecuuse he was hitting at .190) who welcomed the Change. Actually someone had to go for the good of the team uud isnt it easier to try to reform a few spoiled players with unlimited potential? It was in the cards. Williams, although a great manager with an instinctive baseball mind was not a father to his boys. Dick fell victim to one of our modem day eveils. Some call it a failure to communicate; to others it is some sort of generation gap. Troops, the real problem was that Mr. Williams was set in his I who' got way's and refused to tend to some of the blooming stars a little too big for their britches. It is not easy these days to raise a family without interference from a grand pappy Yawkey. Of course, then again, sometimes fathers areu't always the most tactful gays in the world either. Hie Red Sox have as much potential as any team in baseball and no doubt in the days to follow there are going to be a few more pennant flags flying over Boston. But remember who started it all rolling. Remember the guy credited with developing a whole flock of potential superstars; the guy who got a team into the World Series at a time when it sported perhaps the worse pitching staff in baseball; the guy who convinced Rico Fetrocelli he could be the best shortstop in the game; the guy who brought baseball back to Beantown. Dick Williams will get another job in baseball and Yas & crew will mature mark iny words. The Impossible Dream of '67 and the Nightmare of '69 were all part of societys old learning process. The Red Sox will 1e track on top and Mr. Williams will Ire right up there again too. They lietter, because you see I have this tape!
