Show yp to worn) Ibes NPSfl by Marshall B. Wilkins Hie young soldier moved back in his seat, raised a cigarette to his lips and sucked smoke into his lungs as he admired the beautiful Ha- waiian countryside. He continued to view the scenery and smoke. All of a sudden he realized there was smoke all around his head. He started to think, then he thought to himself, "What am I doing to myself?" He jumped up, crushed the pack of cigarettes in his fist and threw it away. Five years and 30 pounds of muscle later, Otis White' is no longer stationed in Hawaii. He's an air traffic controller at Michael Army Airfield and the first place winner in the body building contest held June 1. White won the light weight title in the Colo- radoUtah Body Bi-sta- te Building Championship in Denver. When he threw away that pack of cigarettes five years ago, it was the first step toward winning the contest in Denver and placing in other contests he entered. "The day after threw away my cigarettes joined a health spa and started to work out on nautilus maI I chines," recalled the 26 year old soldier. White, who is 5 inches tall, weighed 130 pounds when he began to lift weights. Now he weighs 160 pounds and competes at 153 pounds. White said the weather in Hawaii encouraged him to start body building. "In Hawaii I was able to wear short pants and short sleeve shirts all year. Everyone including myself, liked to spend time on the beaches. I didn't want to walk on the beach looking out of shape, wanted to look good. So I threw away my cigarettes and started working out," he said. The native of Columbus, Ga., feels it's easy to work out here because he doesn't seem to sweat as much in the desert climate and high feet-- 6 altitude. "Being in shape feels good and body building allows me to do a few things. I can compete in con- tests, body building keeps me from being bored, keeps me off the streets and gives me something to do," said When he's training for a body building contest, White works out with weights six days per week. He starts seven to eight weeks before the contest and does more repetitions and sets. His workouts are longer than when he isn't training for a contest. A repetition is the number of times an exercise is performed. Each time a number of repetitions are done, it's referred to as a set. When he's training for a White. contest, White rests 15-2- 0 seconds between sets where- as he rests one minute when he's not in the seven to eight, week time frame before a ' contest. His pre contest diet consists of raw fish, baked potatoes, green salad, 3 eggs per day and lots of drinking water. White said the purpose of the seven day diet and training program is to get maximum definition out of your muscles. This is commonly referred to in body building circles as "getting ripped" or "cutting up the muscles." White reads body building books and magazines so hell know how to get the most out of his body. He also has to read books on nutrition so he'll know how to diet and utilize carbohydrates. "Ten days before the contest you have to cut carbohydrates out of your diet, then three days before the contest you start consuming foods rich in carbohydrates so when you pose on stage 2-- ' TODD your muscles won't look flat," said White. A member of the National Physique Committee, White came in sixth in his weight class in the February 1984 Armed Forces Body Building Championship. The Civilian Welfare Fund here helped finance the trip to San Diego for that contest. May 25, he competed in the Utah State Body Building Championship in two events. He placed third in the light weight category and 10th out of 22 in the novice category. His first place victory in the June 1 contest will enable him to compete in national competition such as the U.S. Open, with professional body builders. The husky body builder gives a lot of the credit to his wife Shauna. White said she dieted with him and ate the same thing he ate just as if she was going to compete. This made it easier for him to stick to his diet. "Shauna never complains when I go to the gym to workout. She doesn't mind when I buy vitamins and food supplements. She even worked out with me a few times," White said. White said he wants to gain 15 to 20 pounds in the next few years. I dont want to gain weight too fast because it wont be muscle. A good gain would be eight pounds of muscle per year," he added. His next competition will be in September in Salt Lake City. Now White is working out four days per week. Primarily doing exercises that will add size to his body. Eight weeks before the September contest he will go on his rigid diet and maximum definition routine. . With Shauna's help, he Jiopes to place high in his and six day per week workout routine to get ready for the next contest. (U.S. Army photo by Marshall B. Wilkins) OTIS WHITE demonstrates an exercise he frequently performs for his back. Soon he'll have to go on his diet weight class. pre-conte- st Utah ffflshong improves with wairmioig weattheir Fishing continues to im prove with warming weather on most Utah lakes and reservoirs.
