I must state right up front that I cannot judge this book on a doctrinal level; LDS churchmembers will have to decide whether .the authors comments on their religion are accurate. On a literary level, the book suffers from an excess of detail' about people who are not all that interesting. The Lambs were who believed in the. idea of polygamy, but who strayed from a purely reli off-sho-ot Ervil wanted them to. It would be easy to compare LeBaron to Jim Jones, but he clearly lacked the charis- matic leadership qualities of that other disturbed indivi- dual. All Ervil had going for him was the opportunity for men to practice polygamy and for a few rowdies to feel free to terrorize other people and other churches who disagreed with the Lambs of God philosophy. since, the early novels of Joseph Wambaugh. There is very little that is plesant in gamist leader, in Murray, this account of a Santa Monica (California) cops search of a murderer, and the book is definitely not recommended to anyone with an aversion to violence and explicit sexual scenes. Given that admonition, readers will find a quality of realism in Hero and The Terror not found in other police novels. No one is a demi-go- d here, and the murderer is given a surprisingly sympathetic treatment. This novel will stay with you long after you put it down, and if some of the more gory scenes could be toned down, it would make one heck of a movie. Its available from the group interesting. Ervil LeBaron and his troubled band of followers remain unworthy of such an exhausting study and most readers will give up in frustration halfway through Prophet of Blood. It is available on the Bookmobile and at the Post Library. Hero and The Terror, by Michael Blodgett, is a gritty, profane slice of life that is one of the best looks at policemen Post Library.
