Lid-hol- m, Northwestern Utah Is Geological Dream by Don Stovall Our western desert tains minerals galore at least 21 different samples are abundant in this area plus the richest fossil beds in the country are located here. . . the famous Delta, Utah Trilo-bit- e beds. Of course, there is one thing that you should keep in mind and that is most good samples are not found on the surface of the ground or on top of mine tailings. In most cases, the best finds are made by manual labor . . digging, whether in rocky soil or in sand. The key word in the field of gem or mineral prospecting is "patience and this applies not only to finding the specimen but to extracting it as well. Many a rare find has been ruined by haste. Sometimes it will be necessary to remove matrix and specimens in weights from 50 to 75 pounds or more, which can be worked upon return to the .field. These are just a few of the samples that can be found in our western desert: (1) Halite or salt crystals (good quality) in the drainage ditches leading to the potash plant. (2) Tungsten Ore (Stardust), Garnet (US mine). Gold Ore (Alyarado mine) and Arsenic-Pyrit- e Ore (US mine); all can be found at the old town of Gold Hill, Utah. (3) Stibinite & Zinc Ore can be found in the mine shafts of the old community of Clifton, Utah. Turquoise, some of gem qulaity, is located in several of the mines but at the 300 foot level. (4) Tetrahedrite (double age ditches Burmester. in Mar gum Pass. (6) Trilobite Fossils can be found in abundance in the shale draws beginning at Antelope Springs and extending to the Tatow Knob. (7) Auricalchite & Chryso-coll- a the mine tailings; of the Drum Mountains. (8) Topaz Crystals, Beryl-lim Ore (and an occasional beryl crystal) the matrix material is soft Rhyolite. There are many claims in this area so proceed with caution. (9) Manganese Ore at the entrance to Death Canyon. The mine is at 6500 feet. (10) Amethyst Crystals, Quartz Crystals & Flourite Crystals in the fissures and mine. This is in a restricted area of the DPG complex. (11) Wonderstone, the gravel pit on the road leading to the refuse area of DPG. (12) Agate, along the north fence line of DPG in the Cedar Mountains. (13) Iceland Spar & Band ed Calcite, in the vicinity of Cane Springs. (14) Silver Ore, in the mine but this is a restricted area of DPG complex. very surprised to find out that Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge exists and that people live on the refuge. The usual question we are asked is what do you do out ' there? Or, how can you stand living way out there? Well its really not that bad at all. In fact we dont really feel Fish Springs is a bad spot at all. The refuge was established in 1959. At that time the land was a ranch. In the early 1950s an enterprising person tried to raise bullfrogs here and sell them to fine restaurants in Ogden, Salt Lake City and other Utah locations. The venture did not work well and the man went out of ive business. The first refuge manager, Lynn Greenwalt, his wife and two little boys lived in a very small trailer at the present headquarter site. The refuge covers 18,000 acres at the south end of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Water is available from seven springs located on the west edge of the refuge. This water is a constant 80 degrees F year long. It is very high in mineral content so we do not drink it, but do use it for some cooking, bathing and brushing our teeth. We ployees, but the permanent staff numbers four. Two of the staff commute from Callao, 26 miles to the west. The primary objectives for Fish Springs are to be a pro- duction (nesting) area for naturally occurring water-fow- l species and to provide adequate habitat for nesting, natural food production and spring and winter migrating birds. We are presently reaching these objectives and have been improving nesting habitat through pothole redevelopments, burning to juvenate old vegetation, goose nesting island construction and water level manipulations. Next time well bring some insight into what we do here, both at work and during off duty hours. north of the tailings of a mound just northwest of St. John.
