Show I do ylmportatfii.;iPO by SP5 Dave Pinnick Normally, during February, which is Black History month, the accent on stories and luncheon seminars is placed on black leaders, statesmen, scientists and other nationally known figures past or present. Many people know the contributions of people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and famous inventors like Washington Carver, but how many people, especially on Dugway, realize the contributions and variety of activities that blacks on Dugway make? To highlight some of these people, were to focus on some blacks that live, work arid going at play Dugway. .Who they are, what they do, and some of the facts that many people arent aware of concerning their lives. -- Specialists at the Dugway Health Clinic. Robert Jackson ed Sports is Robert Jacksons biggest interest, though history is his favorite class in school. Robert is a sophmore at DHS and is considering delivery of a baby in an ambulance during a snowstorm on the other side of Johnsons Pass. Richard, too, has a fondness for babies. As a Patient Care Specialist at his previous assignment in Italy, he specialized in OB, or pregnancy and delivery care. He had plenty of opportunity to develop his skills, too, because during his tour there, he assisted in the delivery of over 200 30-mon- OOft majoring in English in college though he' has no definite plans for any particular career at this point in time. He likes to play football and basketball, and when he cant play it, he likes to watch it on TV, and spends much of his free time watching cable sports. He gets along well with classmates and has several friends that he associates witli. th babies. Also like Sherman, hes very much into sports, but while Sherman admits that his second most favorite thing in the world (next to delivering babies) is playing basketball, Richards passion is jogging, and often jogs several miles a day. Both Sherman and Richard really enjoy their jobs, soon. They agreed that and Richard plans to since theyve been in the Army that there indeed has been an equal opportunity to learn and advance and that their ethnic heritage earned them no special favors nor denied them any opportunities. Marsella D. Banks Gilbert Banks job is to counsel people who need help and one of the tools he uses to help people is personality tests like the one hes checking here. "isSsf' 4 Gilbert E. Banks Wilfred Jackson Wilfred Jackson is Dugway s Equal Employment Opportunity Officer, and his job is multi-folJack as he Is known, processes complaints concerning such things as age, race, color, religion, national origin, physical handicap and sexual harassment. But his job goes beyond that. He also initiates training and educational programs designed to prevent complaints by making people aware of the potential prQblems brought up by prejudice or bigptry. He's on the commanders staff in an advisory capacity to protect the command from making or being involved in any activity which might be. the basis for a class action suit or other legal action. Jack spent 25 years in the Air Force before becoming a civilian, the last seven of which he worked as an EEO. Hes been doing it as a civilian for the last two years in the field and likes the challenge. The job is very intricate and constantly keeps me on my toes. I feel that I do make a difference and play a significant role because the laws leave no margin for error. .A lot of the time, my job makes a difference in the actions of others, sometimes just by me. being a sounding board and counseling people on their options. I really enjoy the interaction with others." Jack has a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Behavior Modification Counseling and is working on his Doctorate in Human Behaviorial Sciences. He coaches major sports such as boxing karate, basket-hal- l, softball and football. In, fact, his coaching has ' been responsible for several championships. In what remains of his spare time. Jack likes to work with wood, and tinker with cars, both of which hes learned at Dugway craft shops. (Hes building some shelves, currently and has built a marble-to- p table.) He and his wife Dorothy have four children, two boys. Bill, age 19 whos at Snow College majoring in journalism and communications, and Robert, who is a sophmore at DHS. His two daughters, Rhonda, age 21, and Tamara, are both married to military with Rhonda on the way to Germany to be with her husband, and Tamara, age 23, who resides in Florida with her Air Force husband. ' d. er Gilbert. E. Banks is a social worker at Dugway s Health Clinic who provides counseling for children, marriages and families. Gil helps individuals and families overcome problems and when necessary, forwards them on to other specialists if more intensive help Is needed He helps military personnel who have problems adjusting to Dugway and the military way of life, as well as helps eligible civilians and dependents to adjust to their problems. He also does consultation work with the Drug and Alcohol programs and with elementary school children who are experiencing behavioral problems. Gil is a Master of Social Work, has a Bachelors degree in Art and one in Science. His work is in Corrections and he completed graduate study in 1969 at the University of Utah. Hes also a. Woodrow Wilson Fellow, which is a scholastic achievement award. , I like my job, he said, and I find it a real challenge. I've had the chance to work in many areas of the fields of mental health, and as administrative coordinator in correctional institutions, and social work. Among his various job experiences hes worked with the Department of Agriculture as a Job Corps counselor, with the Department- of Interior as a Civilian Construction Corps counselor, as a social worker for the Veterans Administration and in a domiciliary with veterans who are institutionalized with physical or mental handicaps. He was also the administrative coordinator for alcoholism in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington state, and Clinical Director of the post-Maste- rs - . Alvin Tuggle works in Mail and Records, but spends some of his free time studying peoples behavior in places such as malls and parks because of his experience in psychology and his hope to serve in that field somedav. Hes been on Dugway since Dec. 3,' 1981 and in scholastic achievements hes had 2 years at the University of Arkaasas in Little Rock and was majoring in biology. He also attended the. Arkansas State Hospital School of Psychiatric Technicians and then worked as a psychiatric technician for a year and a half before coming into the Army. I have an interest in helping people, he said, and because of my compassion for fellow human beings, someday I would like to continue my education and obtain a degree in psychology. Then I could work in a medical capacity. Tuggle- enjoys listening to music and fishing. He also enjoys people-watchinespecially in malls and other public places that give him an opportunity to study peoples behavior. st - - Eric Morton hopes to be a policeman when hes older, but in the meantime he collects matchbox cars and watches The Incredible Hulk. g, Eric B. He enjoys traveling and sightseeing, and in his life so far, has been all over Utah and the rest pf the. world as well. For over 15 years, hes been serving the government, first as a soldier during the Vietnam war era and later as a civilian. Although he admits hes .42 himself, Gil keeps in shape, doesnt smoke or drink and has the looks of someone in his early 30s. Deborah Wesley is new to Dugway, but finds working in Mail and Records a challenge and enjoys meeting the public. Deborah A. Timothy Harris spends a lot of his day behind a typewriter preparing personnel paperwork and keeping up with changes in regulations. Timothy M. Tim is a 75B Personnel Administration Specialist, and finds his job challenging, intricately detailed and is constantly being updated and changed as to the procedures he uses. His biggest job is handling SIDPERS (Standard Installation, Division, Personnel, Systems), which is used to maintain an accurate account of military personnel. This system involves keeping track of how many soldiers,-wherthey are, what they do and their duty also status. He processkeeps track of ing, completes monthly status reports to higher commands with such information as who is arriving or departing, pending assignments, retirements, who is getting out, or staying in, awards, promotions, pro- Hie personnel office . Eric Stanley has many creative literary talents, but most of all hopes to become a songwriter some day; Eric Stanley Eric Stanley; a eighth grader; hopes to be a songwriter someday and spends a lot of his own time polishing his literary talents. He writes stories, ' poetry and song lyrics, and considers himself to be a clear and open-mindperson. is class favorite' shop, he said, 'and I like My building things." Eric would like to get into rapelling, backpacking and someday travel to the Netherlands. They are proud of their special ethnic heritage, but none the less, they are individuals who each have their own talents, interests, and capabilities and who play a vital role in the accomplishment of Dugways mission. |
