It' seems he got a nosebleed deep in the back of his nose and ended up at LDS hospi-- . tal for a week with a balloon to stop the bleeding up his nostrils. (I wonder if it haJ a clown on it?) thinking that ordeal was over he managed to put in five hours work Monday he felt the pressure build in the same area. The Doctors put him on hiS hack at home, and later found out that the area around the broken blood vessel had become infected. At this writing hes back in SLC getting Short Sheriff s going away party at the golf course. All three of these either have left'DPG or super-cop- s soon to are depart. If you know of a .story that would look good in the .Sampler, a couple of hints will help that idea become reality. First, try and write the story yourself. . . they will edit the story for you and the final result will take less time and lie far more accurate when it appears on these pages. Alice Recently, I got fed up with seeing and hearing various persons and assorted groups crying prejudice" and discrimination" using their ethnic, religious or some other difference as a smokescreen for their own failures or selfishness. I then wrote a searing editorial that was promptly dropped into the trash can by my editor. The five revisions after that soon joined it there, in the circle file, and I remained frustrated. I had something to say, but I wasnt sure how to get it across by. then. So when I read notes taken at the Hispanic dinner held last week, I found my inspiration in the comments of Tooeles Hispanic program manager, counselor Bertha Graham who said, . . . the job of EEO isnt to pay folks back. but just prevent history from repeating itself. . WHAT A refreshing thought! I was not to be held accountable for the mistakes of my predecessors nor would I have to try to make up for al lthe injustices that had been perpetrated upon others centuries ago. I was only responsible for the here and now, what I said and did. No more guilt trips could I have laid on me for the past. , That meant to me, that I and everyone else, should endeavor to treat everyone as equals with fairness now. That everyone form now on shoud have an equal shot at the American dream, a good job, home, family, lifestyle and whatever makes them happy provided that it doesnt interfere in the rights of others. Then another juicy tidbit came into my eager' grasp. A poll had been taken among a. group of Hispanics, as to what name they would prefer attached to their group, such as Hispanics," Mexicano," Latios," Chicanos, etc. An over- whelming majority preferred to be called ... Americans. Doesnt that make you think? SO MANY times we see individuals, with the gimmees" crying foul." when they dont take advantage of the opportunities opened up to all by programs such as EEO, and they see others getting something more than them. Then the person or group demands special treatment using their ethnic" or other group difference as an excuse for their own personal failures. The EEO program was not created to be used as an excuse for laziness, unfair gains or advantages, over others, and extra edge as it were. ONE incident that came to my mind at this, involved a young soldier who complained, when one evening I had CQ" (Charge of Quarters) and was responsible for security of the. barracks in which resided. It was after ten at night when I heard a blast of loud music and noise coming from one of the upper floors. Since it was after quiet hours, when soldiers were to make sure stereos and TVs were turned down, so as not to keep everyone awake, I went up to self-center- ed the-troop- s investigate.. Noise was coming from several rooms and I notified each of the people involved that it was quiet hours" and to turn it down, please." Most grumbled, some cursed but complied and then I approached the loudest of the noises, a stereo being really cranked up. I HAD TO beat on the door to get his. attention, but finally it opened and I reminded the soldier that quiet houre was in effect, was he aware of it? Although he was new to the company, he said yes," and he turned it down, some, and I went down the hall. As I started out the hall door, a friend stopped me to chat, and I let the door close. As the door clicked closed, the stereo came back up loud, but I waited a few seconds longer chatting to my friend. Then it came on full blast and I reluctantly broke off my converstaion (it was too loud to talk in the hall) and once again knocked loudly on the door. ONCE AGAIN it opened and I instructed the soldier it was quiet hours and that now, as per my CQ instructions' I would have the incident, and further violations could result in his stereo being removed form the barracks. The soldier immediately went into a tirade about how I was picking ion him because of his ethnic group and how it was part of his ethnic heritage to' listen to his music loud and how I didnt correct other soldiers not of his ethnic group, etc. I tried to explain to the soldier I had just finished ' shutting down several individuals for the same thing, but it made no difference to the soldier that I was enforcing the rules that applied to all soldiers in the billets, fairly, to all .the individuals. He said, I was picking on him because of his ethnic group, not because he was a soldier breaking a rule. of ethnic or SOME PEOPLE take responsibilty for their ac- should make special exceptions because me'. not other differences, youre wrong, tions, and accept or change the things that affect - LET ME illustrate: Installing special ramps, doors soldier them.
