The canine vaccine must be given in two doses 2--4 weeks apart followed by an annual booster. The shots range from $6 to $7.50 per diot. Dugways .Command Group is working to curb the disease here at Dugway and to find a way to get all Dugway dogs, vaccinated as recom mended by every veterinarian weve been able to contact. They will make every attempt to keep the community informed of progress in these areas at Staff Meetings, through the Weekly Bulletin and tire . Deseret Sampler. . Because the disease does NOT af- fect humans, Health Services Command has a policy that Army Vets will neither procure nor administer either type of vaccine. Dugway has asked Fitzsimmons for an exception to this policy and Fitzsimmons in turn has asked Health Services Command for that exception. Progress on the requested exception was not known at press time. The current status of the disease is this: it is present in Utah and laboratory tests have confirmed it as causing two dog deaths at Dugway. Two other Dugway dogs are known to have been exposed to it. There have not been any large outbreaks of the disease in the state, just widely scattered sporadic cases. If your dog exhibits the following symptoms: Vomiting -- Diarrhea (may be severe and bloody) Dehydration Whining or unusual crying Get treatment from a veterinarian. Severe cases must be treated PROMPTLY and VIGOROUSLY and some will still die in spite of this.
