Corporal Winkle was killed in action in Vietnam on May 16, 1971, while serving with the Headquarters Company, 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. Brigadier Ceneral Max Elkin, Commanding Ceneral of the Deseret Test Center, presented Mr. and Mrs. Hinkle with these meduls posthumously awarded to their son: Silver Star, for gallantry in action; Bronze Star, for valor; Purple Heart and (ond Conduct Medal. Corporal Winkle had previously been awarded tlie Combat Infantryman's Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic Vietnam Service Medal. m A.
