Although in effect for only fourteen months and welcomed in the industry they have come under criticism from many areas of the population. Under direction erf Jack Valenti, the MPAA has been conducting surveys of the movie going public and found that there is a considerable amount of ignorance as to what the rating symbols stand for. The ratings broke films into four categories. A C film was suitable for all ages. An M rating meant that it was suitable for all ages with parental consent. An R rating was given to films that the MPAA felt might Ire suitable for audiences of 16 (18 in some states) if accompanied by a parent or guardian. The X rating was given to pictures that the association felt no one under 16 or 18 should be admitted under any circumstances. Most of the criticism centered on the M rating. Most of the people interviewed felt that this rating meant for adults Only. The MPAA has decided to scrap this rating and in its place have a CP rating. This rating will mean General audiences with parental discretion. This rating results because some movies GUY TARGETS Caeaef ri T3S .22 SHELL SPECIAL Reg. 4.00 22 HwNi 1 1"A might be enjoyed by all but the very young members of the family. Violence and some profanity might cause families not to want their children to see these films. Another change made by the association is that of changing the age requirement for X and R movies. The age, formerly 16 has now been raised to 17 and remains 18 in some states. The reasons for these changes is that some of the films released foil between two rating categories and are rated two different ratings according to the area that it is in. True Crit, for example is rated G in some areas and M in other because of a couple of words of profanity and all of the violence. Instead erf die regular ratings that are now in effect die four categories will be C with its current meaning, CP general with parental discretion, and R and X with the same meanings ' as now except for the age requirement. The reviews said that Miss Alexander won the audience with her naivete and uninhibited sweetness and light. After one particularly dramatic speech the audience broke into spontaneous applause. Being from Wisconsin it is nice to hear that something good is coining from there. Congratulations Linda and who knows maylie Hollywood will lie your next stop. WHY? As predicted in this column a few weeks ago a company by the name of Community Television Inc., has filed a notice of intention to install a cable television system in Salt Lake City. In the notice sent to the City commissioners the firm indicated that construction has begun. The project will include microwave service, cable attachments to telephones and other utility poles and special equipment to provide added video service. Construction will begin this spring. Producer-DirectBuzz Kulik is going to put the University of Wisconsin in the public eye for other things than student demonstrations and losing football teams. Kulik is adapting a short story by Irwin Shaw for the screen and part of the action takes place on a college campus. It was supposed to have been Cornell University but the scene was switched to Wisconsin. He was a football player for Wisconsin during the mid forties so he decided to take his cameras and crew back to Madison for the scene. We might not be able to make it playing football but that wont stop the camera crews from doing their thing. Who knows perhaps football will be eliminated and a dome put on the 77,800 seat stadium and turn it into a theater. They could fill it up better that way than they do during football season. Incidentally the new footlrall coach said he may not lie aide to win right away. With a winning attitude like that he will be in Madison less than one year of his contract. I have received word from my home state that there is an up and coming star emerging from there.
