Beeler Saturday, Juiy 23rd, the Marine reserve group here from California, executed the missile exercise that they came to Utah for. s For a little East-Texa- farm girl with no real technical background, watching the 'show was a thrilling experience. In a practice exercise like Saturdays, there must be a target or a drone for the missile to shoot at. In a combat situation, drones arent needed, as the aircraft of the enemy are picked up by the Hawks radar system. Drones are expensive, about $140,000 each, so when they are used in trainig exercises the object is to detonate near th drone, but not impact with the drone. After have served their purpose, the drones pop a parachute, and drift down to the ground where they are picked up later with a helicopter. They are then refueled and may be used again. to wait for calm winds. Bonaro also went on to say n around and head back towards the waiting missiles. This is the direction that an aircraft would come in a combat situatiohn. on-comi- Marines are more than happy "Hurry up and wait" is a one reality in more-thabranch ofthe service. Bittr, as when the drone is fired, it goes out many miles and is then radio controlled to turn that file Marines are pleased with their stay and Dugway, and hope to be back soon. CW03 Anthony Bonaro explained to me, with the large sum of money involved, the ng 71, Close to each set of missiles is a radar unit which bobs and turns while picking up the signal of the rapidly approaching drone. Computers decide which missile or missiles are at the best advan- tage for the shot, and that missile is fired. Watching this exercise is to say the least.
