Show The DESERET SAMPLER, Fri- - Jan. Ski buffs air complaints 8, 1971 JOHN IIOWF. Willi the Winter sports season in full swing, many Dugway residents are enjoying one of the liest skiing seasons ever everyone that is except the individuals who check out their skiing equipment from Morale and Welfare Supply. These hearty and PATIENT individuals may lie found every Monday and Friday mornings either returning their skiing equipment or standing in office to line waiting for the check-ou- t open so that they may obtain equipment for the coming weekend. A DISINTERESTED stranger would probably lie quite amused as lie uhscrv-e- d the weekend skiers' anticipations of A vintage year for all sports The year of 1970 was especially interesting in the world of sport with old favorites and powerhouses falling by the wayside and upstarts maturing to championship caliber. The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers were the big surprises in the hockey world. The Bruins parleyed Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and muscle into their first Stanley Cup in 29 years. The Rangers were the best balanced and most powerful team in hockey until late February when their magnificent goaltender Ed Ciacoinin liegan to get tired and their defense corps was hit with injuries. Hull Reformation The Chicago Black I lawks brought alxnit the reformation of Bobby Hull from super individual to super teammate, got unreal goaltending from an awkward looking rookie named Tony "the other" Esposito and rocketed from last place to the Prince of Wales trophy and a spot in the Eastern Division finals. The Pittsburg Penguins, with motivation and pride fisupplied by new coach Red Kelly made the Western liefore nals and gave St. Louis all they could handle succumbing. Still the real surprise of the season was the failure of the Montreal Canadians to make the MIL playoffs. Only the oldest, staunchest fans and writers could remember the last time Les Habs had gone home after the regular season. Orr Shines The individual who outshone them all was Robert Cordon Orr, the Bruins' brilliant young defenseman who collected trophies as the Most Valuable Player, leading scorer and liest defenseman in the NHL. Orr set a league record with 87 assists and a goal scoring record for defensemen with 33. As much as his scoring does for his team, it is his ability to control the tempo of a game that makes him so valuable. He can run the power play, kill penalties, protect a lead or bring his team flying from liehind. The kings of professional liaskethall are the NBA ;New York Knicks and the AM Indiana Pacers. It is ;only fitting that this lie so because New York City and Indiana are the two top hotlieds of liasketliall in this ; country and have leen for years. Expansion emlwrrassment Late 1970 saw the expansion of the NBA exposed as so much ridiculousness when Portland and Buffalo could leat only each other and Cleveland couldn't beat anyliody, prolialily not even a decent college team. The ABA meanwhile saw their changes and adjust-- " i ments blossom with the success of the Utah Stars, Vir-- . ginia Squires and Memphis Pros. Rookie Dave Cowens had provided the mobile big man they needed to go with John Havlicek, JoJo White and Don Chaney. They are not championship calilier yet, but they are contenders once again. Hawks take dive The Atlanta Hawks dropped out of competitive sight with the departures of Zebno Beatty and Joe Caldwell for the ABA and the arrival of Pistol Pete Maravich. The Milwaukee Bucks have risen to championship contention ..with the pairing of Lew Alcindor and Oscar ' Roliertson. The LA Lakers are hanging on with Jerry West despite the aging of Elgin Baylor and the disin-- . terest of Wilt Qiamlierlain. Barry Watson replaced Fielder when the veteran playmaker was sidelined with a knee injury and Ixith he and Kassian blinked the light over the weekend. The "Mod Squad" produced three goals in the two games and Jerry Ma.ur's "Whirlwinds" also connected three times, captain Bobby Ellett connecting for all three. Butch Deadinarsh has replaced Ted Hodgson on the Mazur line, with Ellett moving to the right side. Still sidelined with injuries are Hodgson, Fielder and defenseman Paul Terlienche. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, the two NL flag winners had only one winner, Jim Merritt of Cincv, lietween them and had it not lieen for the brilliance of their bullpens it is doubtful they would have lieen winners. Dave Culsti of the Pirates and Clay Carroll and Wayne Granger of Cincy were among the top five or six relievers of the year. Baltimore emerged as a near super team with the big pitching three of Dave McNally, Jim Palmer and Mike Cuellar and the big hitting three of Frank Robinson, Boog Powell and Brooks Robinson. Angels move up The California Angels made great strides during 1970 pushing themselves to a contending position and then acquiring Tony Conigliaro's hitting and Ken Berry's defense to complement Alex Johnson in one of liaseliall finer outfields. Thirty-si- x year old Luis Aparicio will remember 1970 for some time to come. It was the first time in his illustrious career that he had hit over .300 and he was rewarded by lieing traded to the Boston Red Sox where he may yet help to make a contender out of a bunch of talented individuals. Rico Carty made an astounding comeliack from TB to win the NL hatting championship; Tony Perez and John Bench had their finest years ever as they continued to blossom as ringleaders of the Reds; the Culis flopped again and the Mets found out that great pitching Is not infaliable. 20-ga- NFL-AFmerge The first year of the pro football merger proved alisolutely unreal as the powerhouse Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams missed the playoffs only to see the fledgling Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati' Bengals move into the select circle of championship hopefuls. The long frustrated San Francisco 49ers finally made it to the NFL title game only to lose to the equally frustrated Dallas Cowlwys. The 49ers haven't lieen near a title since 1957 and the Cowlxiys seem to lie close all the time, but they had just as few pennants to show for it as the 49ers Meanwhile the Baltimore Colts jumped in with all the old AFL teams and won a division title easily. The Cleveland Browns, however, jumped in and drowned, as they were licaten out bv the Bengals. That was some of what happened in the pro sports world during 1970. The big questions of immediate interest in 1971 are: Who will win the Super Bowl? Can the Knicks hold off the Bucks another year?; Will the Stanley Cup remain in Boston or journey to New York, Chicago or inaylie liack to Montreal?; and can UCLA do it again? Part of the answer to the UCLA question asks whether or not South Carolina will survive the ACC tourney this year. d g (MPs fall twice K :;; I The intramural basketball league is underway again after the Christmas break and the MPs have had a severe crimp put in their title aspirations. Why is it that the first individual in the room is startled to discover that there are only four pair of buckle Ixxits remaining on the shelves and that one half of the Head filierglass skis are already checked out? And another small gripe, why is it that lieginning skiers traveling to the slopes for their initial efforts are allowed to use the filierglass skis instead of the wooden skis? Apparently the Morale and Welfare Division hasn't heard aliout the Army's lietween policy of officers and enlisted men. The rules for issuing of skiing equipment state that no special favors will be given to anyone when skiing equipment is involved.
