As chart shows, Utahs rate is far below most Western States, although two adjoining states, Nevada and Wyoming have none at all. Vetos Moth CIoss The State Board of Examiners Tuesday vetoed a requeLt of the State Highway Department to teach basic mathc-matic- j to lower grade technicians, thus permitting them to advance to higher positions. The board, however, approved part of the Highway a Department request course home-stud- y in plans reading for the technicians. Board members evidently felt that basic math is something which employes should have learned in the high schools. The plans reading course will cost the state $26,000, plus another $4,000 to $5,000 in printing costs. The Highway Department had requested the courses as a means of upgrading employes and boosting morale. Examiners also approved a new policy on per diem pay for out of state travel and acted on several other items. usual The per diem allowance of $14 will remain the same as at present, but travel allowances will be $22.50 per day except in six cities where food and lodging is particularly high, where the new allowance will be $25 a day. HIGH-COSCITIES . These cities are New York, Washington, D.C., Miami, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, the examiners approved an arrangement whereby employes may be reimbursed for actual expenses under special circumstances. However requests must be submitted and approved in advance and then be substantiated by vouchers. The board gave a nod to pay increases for secretaries and stenographers in cases where a recent general upgrading of pay brings rela Stag c mm 4: tively new employes up to the pay level of those with more experience. 5 PCT. BOOSTS To prevent this compac tion of pay levels, the board authorized five percent Increases for the older employes, except in cases where this would bring the pay above the maximum of $600 a month. In these cases, the increase would be held to two and one-ha- rc r lf percent. nother action of the board will enable Secretary of State Clyde L. Miller to reimburse Mrs. Modesta Silver for $310 damage done to her auto in a collision with a state maintenance truck on the Capitol grounds Sept. 9. The payment of the claim had previously been approved by the board, but Miller said he didnt have any money in his budget to pay for it. Meanwhile, Mrs. Silver said her car is laid up for repairs and she doesnt have any funds to pay for it. ill Oc I - ' Baking Specials T f ,y:' h Geld Medal Flour !.... .10 $l,s 25 & $239 Gold Medal ySWECTJWUSTAR&l Flour'?.
