That was the beginning of In The Year 2525, the prophetic lyric which in three short weeks zoomed to the top of the record charts in Salt Lake City and the nation. Girls are volunteers at Valley West Hospital in Granger. ld The tune became a forgotten tune until last November when Zager and Evans included it in their club act. The fans repeatedly requested it, so Evans took the initiative of borrowing $500 and having it n recorded by a record firm. No matter what day or shift the candy stripers work there is always something new to do or experience. Pat Herrmann, and Vicky Tori Schneller Kropf, candy stripers at Valley West Hospital will testify to this. Each striper works a shift of four hours and the girls look forward to serving meals and serving refreshments to patients. Others make beds, gather water pictures or do office work. One of their favorite jobs is entertaining small children at the hospital by reading or playing with them. The girls who are candy stripers come from families varying in nationality, social and economic status. Theyre girls who are willing to volunteer their time to help people. We look for eager, dependable girls," commented Mrs. Verna Lee Johnson, supervisor of the candy stripers. We have a waiting list of girls who are willing to volunteer their time to work on the program. On the waiting list are names of girls who are willing to work but the hospital doesnt have duties for. Girls are notified as sodn as there is a vacancy to be filled on the candy striper staff. Surprising as it may seem, many of the stripers claim that they cant stand the sight of blood! Most of the girls are very soft hearted, too. "When I first started working at the hospital, I often found myself close to tears, But claims Vicky Kroph. later I tried to think about patients getting well instead of the ones who were so sick. Mrs. Johnson is very much in favor of the program. This group of girls is wonderful. They are marvelous with the patients and in turn the patients are friendly and appreciative. With the stripers running errands for the patients, fulltime nurses are free to do more important jobs. The girls have the time to do many of the same small things fer patients that make them more comfortable and would otherwise be difficult to do. The candy stripers themselves have a high opinion of the program. I think its a worthgreat organization, while for any girl who wants to get in, said Pat Tori also thinks highly of her job. It gives me a good feeling to know I can help people. I think it is a really good experience. remote area, its a good idea to take along a tool kit and an extra fan belt or two.
