Each tors 75 was provided with considerable research, and some artists were taken to the origianl sites. EXHIBIT SPONSOR The exhibit is sponsored by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Cenwhich was originally tral Pacific, one of the two whose trains met at Promon- th tory. A fine illustration, but questionable in its historical accu racy, is "The Finale," a picture if the Golden Spike driving, by Ron McKee, Wilton, Conn. This is part of a new federal a y acquisition to program under which the state will be given $3.8 million in the next three years. Among the projects to be aided by purchases of unimproved land which otherwise probably would have buildings erected and cost more later righ are: East Valley Freeway, 'fist South to 1835 East, $440,000; Redwood Road from 62nd South to 35th South, $325,000; Redwood Road from North Temple to 900 North, t110,000. North, Orem, $213,000; 12th Street, Ogden, from Wall Avenue to Harrison Eighth Boulevard, North, U.S. South, Music $210,000; 4th Bountiful, from 145 to 91, $41,500, and 26th Bountiful (near Valley Hall) from 145 to U.S. 91, $42,000. All these projects must be programmed for construction within seven years and projects built within five years after the programming, if the state is to retain the federal money. The commission also agreed to allow the Utah County Commission to remove highway lighting posts and equipment between Provo south city limits and Springville north city limits on U.S. 91. These lights no longer are needed with the opening of and the posts are a traffic hazard, the staff reported. Condnuod from Page 111 meeting, members of the school's Advisory Council expressed strong support for Losee, declaring he had demonstrated dynamic leadership during a time of rapid growth. They emphasized, however, that they are not "a cheering section" for Losee and that they recognize administration y "is a street." two-wa- URGED SUPPORT They commended the state board report and urged the board to support Losee's position in denying tenure to the two faculty members Involved, Melvin T. Smith, as- sociate professor of history, and L. Carl Jensen, instructor In chemistry. (The UEA recommends prompt reinstatement of Smith and continuation of Jensen's contract for another year). A minority position was voiced by Advisory Council member A. Karl Larson, who was an instructor at the college for many years. "If there is any responsibility for the distrust at the college, it lies with the president and his academic dean," Larson charged. Stanley Holt, Hurricane, said he thought the report of distrust had been "picked up and magnified" by the mass media. Allen. the program coordinators, project has pleased both the parents umd the staff of the reading center. Parents report that their chilren show more enhusiasm, interest, alertness and independence after participation in the program. ' SEEING THEM READ A survey of parents showed they all want the program continued, and 83 per cent want it expanded, Allen reports. He says test results show that the preschool students score better than 74 per cent of the average children entering the first grade. "I'm pleased with the test results, One teacher said, "but what pleases me post is to see them read." Le Grand P. Backman, State Board of Education chairman, read a letter from Bryce E, Roe, a Salt Lake attorney, who said he had been retained by Smith and Jensen to determine their rights to tenure and continued employment. Be asked that a hearing for the two men, set for Thursday. be postponed to allow time to prepare a brief. He also asked for state board documents and evidence bear:- ing on the situation. The board took the request under advirement. The state board report held, In part: That the major problems on the campus relate to needs for improved conditions, more definite administrative procedures, faculty involvement in deliberations leading to administrative decisions and more attention to building good human relationships. It cited Incidents of poor judgment on the part of the faculty in discussing mattrs with students in classrooms. That an audit conducted by the State Auditor's office makes som erecommendations for improvements, but contains no findings which would Indicate misuse or misappropriation of funds. That the school needs greater invol,,ement of persons affected by administrative decisions, improvement of communications on all levels, improvements in administrative practices and policy interpretations and improvment in management and execution of instructional activities. CONCLUSIONS The report concludes that the State Board of Education 'is proud of the accomplishments of Dixie College. The faculty, the students, the administration and the community ar to be commended for significant contributions. Dixie is a fine institution with a great future. 'Recent personality dashes, mistrust, misunderstandings, a a d incorrect procedures and the attention need thoughtful resolution of all concerned with the future of the college. These problems are not beyond solution if the administration and faculty, sincerely desire to solve them." Michael J. Davey VITAL RENON Edith pi Coma STATISTICS Court sisters. Charles H. Judge Jones said he has asked the state attorney gen 0 eral's office to study minutes of the legislative session to determine if the bill was legally passed. He recalled that the bill (SB106) was passed by the Senate and House, but temporarily held in the House upon request of one of the represenhe tatives who indicated might try to recall it for reconsideration.
