Major Rail Junction Suggested For Salt Lake City should come a major junction point on the national passenger train system to be developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This was advoctted by the new Utah Transportation Council at a meeting held at State Industrial Promotion Council headquarters and in a letter to John Volpe, secrebe- tary of transportation. L. Weilenmann, Milton council chairman. said in the letter that a central route between Chicago, S,It Lake Daniel F. Laurence, division director, said that experts have testified to Con- City, and the three coast cities of &elle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, has the following advantages: The central route would serve more population than w ould alternative routes acrosq the northern or south- ern states. Costs would be less for the central route because existing depots and other facilities could be used. Population centers to the north and to the south would serve as backup and "feeders" to the central route. gress that no structural damage would occur to Rainbow Bridge from the waters which would rise to 20 feet below the bridge abutments. "Beauty of the monument would be enhanced and its accessability would be improved," Lawrence said. Notoriously cold Woodruff aiming for the record again this winter, reporting 24 degrees below zero on Dec. 19. E. The cold front which thoved across the region Tuesday evening dissipated in southern Utah and Nevada during the night. It left seven Males of new snow at Alta. Brighton and SoliAlde and four inches at Park City and Park City West. Alta's total depth has topped the 100 inch mark much earlier than usual with 102 inches on the ground. Brighton is close behind with 98 inches total depth and Solitude with 95 inches. The snowfall was light in most valleys, but caused some traffic problems in the Salt Lake Valley, coming during the evening rush hour. The Salt Lake Airport recorded .03 of an inch of precipitation fron the snow. this system had Snows hardly ended before the snow ahead of the next Pacific storm moved into southwest Idaho during the night. A Twice in Utah history the mercury has dropped to 50 below zero, once at Woodruff in January 1899 and again in the 19203 at Strawberry East Portal. The coolest it's ever been in Salt Lake City is 30 below zero on Feb. 9, 1933. Election Of Solon little l'ght snow was fall- !tig on Utah highways today with some ottifting ,hrough the Wasatch mountains and from Daniels summit to the Strawberry area. Similar conditions are expected tonight, but more snow may fall in the northwest Thursday. Some stretches of highways are snowpacked and sanded and chains or snowtires are suggested to the ski resorts. The Utah Highway Patrol reported a "monumental traffic jam" in Little Cottonwood road to Alta, Canyon, about 10:30 a.m. today, with a number,of multiple car accidents, but no serious injuries. Offocers said there was a steady stream of cars going up the canyon, but most of the accidents were caused by vehicles as they skidding came down the canyon. The extended forecast indicates a shance of snow Friday, but clearing by Sunday. High temperatures today and Thursday will range from 35 to 45, with lows tonight 20 to 30 in the west and 10 to 20 the east. Salt Lake City's high and low Tuesday were 39 and 25. Lake, has Carling, been upheld by district court after a recount in one district which reduced his margin from 17 votes to 14. The ruling was made by Third District Judge D. Frank Wilkins. His Democratic opponent, G. Don Austin, irdicated was not satisfied by the decision. but said he probably would not take any further steps. He had asked that the votes in all 25 voting districts in Legislative District 2 be recounted. ONE DISTRICT Judge Wilkins ordered a recount only in the district where irregularities had been alleged. However, Aus- tin four more votes and Mr. Carling one more. Nine ballots were voided. The voting district involved, NJ. 247. is in the Central City area. Witnesses testified that eight to 18 ballots might not have been counted. Austin also questioned era sure marks on the dispositionof-ball- form. ELECTION JUDGE An election judge later explained the erasure marks as her decision tq change an "0" to "none" in the column for spoiled ballots. there Carling contended must be evidence that the election outcome evJuld be changed by the opaning of ballot pouches. There was no such evidence in this case, he ots said. Austin urged modicication of Utah election laws to provide for an automatic recount in the case of extremely close elections. for Wednesday, Thursday, tan AND Farming tn.
