a saloon keeper in this city whose death was reported to have been caused by abortion the tho following witnesses were examined J H scott mesdames lowling bowling and showell sene moore dr S E crain SNELL sanell geo goo J TAYLOR coroner I 1 the C coroner aroner issued his warrant for the apprehension of dr grain crain and on munday bunday afternoon he was arrested and lodged in the city prison this morning the dr was brought into the police court for a preliminary examination but the hinves t was postponed until bues tues tuesday d ay next the accused being held I 1 in n bonds to appear at that time daring escape of prisoners about half past eight yesterday evening the jailers of the county prison were changing the prisoners seven in number from the day to the night cell the doors of which are opposite each other in the corridor in the basement of the court house mr hirr john newton as is his usual custom stood near the cell celi dors doors while mr nir john stood at the door of the passage way several paces off one of the prisoners asked permission to pass OR on to where mr was sing saying li he e wished to speak to ili lit him n about v a letter letten bob mccausland who asb has been een always treated wit with h great kindness also passed along towards mr and the two as soon as aa they got near enough made an attack on him they dealt him a heavy blow on the a side de of the face with a blunt implement of some kind and partially stunned him and had he not been thus disabled in the outset it would have fared badly with them for mr is a very powerful man and even as it was they hau bau to be assisted by a third party before he could be secured meanwhile two other prisoners made a simultaneous attack on mr newton the latter gentleman instantly flopped hopped one of his an antagonists over on his back on the floor or but the other jumped upon him im and the two finally overpowered him this done dole one of them assisted lyl ISI mccausland cCausland and his companion to secure mr strook during all this time the three remain ing prisoners stood upon neutral ground interfering on neither side the four men bound the two fal fai jailers jailors alors with
