Mary Claire Upthegrove Theres an interesting story behind this skier with the unlikely name of Mary Claire Upthegrove who won the Class C womens crown Sunday in the Majestic Cup. Tanned and confident Mary, now a ski instructor under Alf Engen came to Alta from Michigan in the winter of . She had never been on a pair of skis before. But I fell in love with Alta and decided to learn about this skiing business" she said. e Since I was too broke to be a ski bum, I took a job there." Two years later she was a ski in53-54- structor. Keith Lange got her started, teaching and encouraging the new snow bunny from Michigan. Ordinarily she would have been busy giving ski lessons at Alta last Sunday, but Lange encouraged her to try racing and Alf said she should take a day off and give It a try. So, she entered her first race and won her first first-plac- e trophy. Her name was also engraved on the big Majestic Cup trophy for fastest female time of the day. HU 4-- 61 SI Sunday Wedneiday Evening,. 6.30 p.m. The Usquebaugh Ski Club, busy summer and winter, has a proud tradition. They have never cancelled a ski meet, even held a race two hours late at Snow Park once when they couldnt hold one on the sunset side of the Wasatch. But not long ago they had a meet cancelled for Them the Intermountain Ski Assn, awarded their date for the Solitude Cup to the Salt Lake Ski Club. True, Solitude Is closed right now, but the Usquebaughers never were contacted to see If they were going to move the race somewhere rise. Club officials have the trophies, but no race date. The ISA really missed on that one. . . . Particularly so when you realize the Usquebaughers will have some $100 to turn over to the ISA for junior racers expenses. Thats probably well over what any other Utah ski club will come up with. Incidentally Bob Barrett, Solitude owner, told the Usquebaughers last week that he would like to open his multimillion dollar resort end of this month. He'd like to do it with a bang a major ski meet such as the Solitude Cup. I 4 - Solitude Opening Pending How is the ball held in the starting stance?
