Sites for some of Americas greatest playlands are already established. Juniper-splattered- and the area will receive an estimated 300,000 visitors yearly. Provisions have been made for eight boat clubs, two resorts, six youth camps and several summer homes, all by private owners. This year a half million dollars Was allocated for the first phase of the program. Six of the 13 campgrounds and picnic areas scheduled for construction by 1962 are completed. Roads, parking barfacilities and chain-iinrier fences have been finished for Red Canyon Overlook 1,500 feet above the river. Most Colorful Tourists at Flaming Gorge may wonder which is the more colorful the geography, history or the local inhabitants. From the little town of Manila on the Utah- Wyonfing border, a road loops fto Dutch John, a few miles away, headquarters for the construction of the dam. The road crosses the river at one point, and suddenly Flaming Gorge bursts into view. The drab. hills break open revealing the burning caldron of sandstone in various shades from orange to carmine, with the Green River loafing between the darkening walls of Red Canyon on its way to meet the Colorado in picturesque southeastern Utah. One of the first campgrounds to be constructed under the new program was Little Hole near Dutch John. Resting amid junipers on the riverbank, it was once a hideaway for such badmen as Butch Cassidy and his gang. A road encircling the recreation area traverses Sheep Creek Canyon and across 'the Ashley National Forest, the drive through the ages," said to represent a billion years of variegated rock formations within 20 miles. People in little towns like Manila are friendly, and same of them, with scant urging, will recall tales of badmen, robbers, cattle rustling and murder. - Two Major Play Areas Being Developed , Through the Years 1802"1060 -- W00DSCR0SS CANNING COMPANY lots to see, aboard the most talked about train in the country!
