It's not his own mind you. One of his University of Utah netters has hippy tendencies . . . long hair and all. Danny Bleckinger is a rather peaceful, docile young man until he gets tennis racket in hand. Then hes rather effective to say the least. Coach James said in his preseason banter that Danny Bleckinger could possibly be the best No. 3 player in the collegiate realm. A couple of wins last week against UCLA and University of Southern California seemed to prove that conclusively . . . or almost. Although Danny won both outings theres still a little matter to settle this week as the Utes host Brigham Young University on Wednesday, 2 p.m. at the Salt Lake Swim and Tennis Club. In the No. 3 spot for the Utes this year, Bleckinger has won 15 of 16 matches. Gaps in a grin, though, are marks of valor to hockey men. Accuse one of having all his teeth, and nine of 10 times hell pull out a handful of false ivories to show his battle honor. Theres a good chance that Danny will be our best entry in the NCAA, James disclosed this week. A the of bargain. part Plenty Of Pride About then, a member of the Salt Lake City contingent quipped rather flippantly: Seems like a lousy way to make a living. Unfortunately, he was overheard by Vancouvers temperamental defenceman, Don Johns, who glowered: What do you do, buddy? I figure my profession is as good as yours. Johns wasnt smiling, so that ended the conversation. Johns had the bridge of his nose flattened almost even with his face by a puck traveling in excess of 100 mph. He was out of action a couple of months. But that didnt dim his love for hockey. Genial defenceman Marc Resume, who pounded a slap shot into the net to win for the Canucks in 9:03 of overtime, winced at Johns. Now, Don, lets not get belligerent with our guests. Lets wait until next year when theyre in action against us. Then Marc added: Its this way. Hockey players have intense pride in the sport. Were especially in a proud mood tonight, being Patrick Cup champs. This win tonight was worth $1,000 to each player. But I guarantee we would have played 60-fo- ot just as hard for $1. Coach and general manager Joe Crozier has much pride in his Canrcks, too, and in the WHL. The National Hockey League governors have been saying our bid for a franchise has been stalled because of a lack of talent, Crozier said. To see just how much difference there is, Ive challenged the Los Angeles Kings to a best of three or best of five series in Los Angeles or Vancouver." Like Father, Like Son The thing these Vancouver lads were all jazzed up about was a loving cup (monickered Patsince 1949 with rick) which has been blood, sweat, tears and teeth. And since Vancouverites hadn't laid eyes on it since April, 1960, it had almost become a myth. The late Lester Patrick and West Coast hockare synonomous. Patrick played, coached and ey managed hockey over a span of 50 years, linked mainly with the New York Rangers. As owner of the Victoria Cougars of the WHL, he was first to exploit a farm system in hockey. Known as the Silver Fox", he and his brother, Frank, devised the hockey playoff system which still is used. Lester Patrick is one of the most famous names in hockey's Hall of Fame (Toronto, Ca.). Following in their fathers footsteps, Lynn and Murray Patrick played for New York. Murray is a Madison Square Garden vice president, mostly as result of his hockey feats. Lynn is general manager of the St. Louis Blues, most successful expansion club in the NHL . . . now in the Stanley Cup playoff with Montreal. re-fill- is Dan Bleckinger 12-in- i Tennis Lineup By NORM SHEYA 15-- 1 on the year. surface 1 nd p.m. Courts Thursday Montana at Utah Towne House Friday p.m. Arizona Stata at Utah, House Courts 2 p.m. Arizona at BYU.
