1 1 1853 and fo found ad there a small all branch of the church chek ur an and vas fras refreshed in finding the same spirit amongst them that prevails amongst the r saints aidi t s in the mountains but I 1 found not the I 1 liberty that I 1 had bad anticipated when I 1 left home the brethren who had been laboring here wre ivere put in prison for preaching and bacting bap ting wg people for the remission of sins eina 1 when 4 I 1 arrived here I 1 found six brethren brethen in prison sorl and three had a short time before I 1 been liberated froni from the prison on conditions i that they should cease bease their labors until the 1 decision returned state court and then j i the other six were liberated on the same conditions dit ions I 1 J there r e is a law in this country called the dissenter cis senter n air la w grants liberty to all religious parties except jews and jesuits on conditions that they shall he be acknowledged as a christian society arid aid their priests authorized authorised to preach etc by the civil authorities author ties when the brethren arrived here from denmark to open the gospel door to this nation they petitioned civil authorities to be ac as christians but their petition was sent by the civil ci vil authorities to the clerical ones who delayed answering the request so long that the brethren communel d their mission the clergy were divided in their views reviews whether w we e should be acknowledged ar a arnol or net I 1 the civil authorities therefore in consequence ofa of a section in the dissenter law cast the brethren into prison until the case ws was de cid edby edily the courts of lower cour court t was against us and fined ther the brethren eight dollars eachen the superior tribunal confirmed the deci decision sinn of tile the first but ae acknowledged us as a christian party mariy in the future but at tae he anit amir mand fahe the superior officer of a jurisdiction appealed this sentence to tile the supreme court whose decision was as follows I 1 th that t we W were ere not acknowledged as a christian church arid and fined the brethren ten dollars I 1 each this was decided on nov ath during alie discussion of the question the church was in increased hesed td tt a about labog E members and i e that timo time wi we have labor edwith much difficulty in P promulgating the I 1 g gospel arp el since at i nee the bi brethren ethren afe are liable to he cast into P i an d fined or be punished shed in prison on on bred bread dind and water besides the fir b ethren abovementioned there are 13 brethren fined some for fod preaching re aching and some soine for baptizing from froin ten to twenty dol lar and those thore who cannot pay the fine area are imprisoned op on bread and water from four to eight days I 1 under these circumstances we have accordi ing to the law osgold of god Gold letitio petitioned the judges judge sand and rulers and at last the ladgir lawgiving ing asse assembly 1 of the capon but hitherto alam va vain efrom this you can judge t that ai we li have ve t to 0 labor with al au care as well as faith and boldness in order to spread this work an and the brethren hren who go forth I 1 inthis in inis biamon must prepare thein themselves pelves both bath for prisons and I 1 persecutions of every kind put thanks be to god in spite spike of all the obstacles a our tir enemies pea ies try to raise I 1 and all their lies es ane anc publications I 1 against ag I 1 is still at t present we e number about members i r 36 living having emigrated a p U t is better eat r now ha i 0 it Ws has been afi the authorities are mare more mild boar towards djs us u I 1 in most anos lf places s w where here t therease ther lle r eare ir branches of the church because those thoe thathy that leive e testified age against ast us have borne the very best te testimony stimon that the cormons mormons ire are a gao good and virtuous virtu 0 6 is people which has so 0 goo good loan an influence that hat many who before were against u 6 begin fd 0 o as eek our oar meetings and show u us more respect I 1 also think thit that the priests have blown their biggest st blast against us many of them have visited our meetings and all I 1 khz they canado is to advise the hearers rs to hold to th their former doctrines especially what they baa have learnt from their but when we request 11 I 1 I 1 them to prove their doctrine fro irom in the bible they have hie never attempted in the least to show grounds for the doctrines they ha have ve tau taught j the people jck centuries and when to public discua ta re iskat wat they have not come for discussing the matter ind ant alway without proving the least against our doctrine doe r I 1 believe that they all have gone in atthe b adya at i ifie i Y i I 1 tny aw ai ah who aaela are laboring in the yin vineyard I 1 yrtl d djojo ae d d faithful they fear god goda nd adl bildt no 1 and IW saints in general ird are glad and normey rejoicing ip what they have received so that ah ahe prospect is ils fair ap and daul fua of promise for a gr great 64 arii and good henryes ande ndue time thuie when n wf we 0 look o at th the unfavorable circumstances already me mentioned edw I 1 we can can plainly see iee that tle the lord has blessed our laboris in opening the wv way for the gospel in in the different places ia
