Natoi last Waeka aet vote. lake Aa Open Letter te te the cMtaea whe a The total la the Sett vaBey, aad y. la an editorial aeveral weeks ago we said that die United States ought to trade its surplus wheat to Russia for some of Russia's oil. As we know, U.S. government negotiators tried to accomplish this, but were ansacccisfril because Russia was afraid of angering die Arab states by giving us a preferential price on oil and competing with the Arabs in sales of oil to us. Thus the Russians have assigned a purely political function to one of their potential export commodities. Farmers' groups In Utah and the U.S. criticised our governments efforts to bargain politically with our wheat in the same manner. Our "Handful of Thoms" Award to them for foiling to realize that our wheat, and any other goods we produce for sale in the world market, are, by their very nature, poUtical tools in our relations with other countries. For some time now we have been impressed with the KSL editorial comments aired daily on KSL Radio and TV. These We do comments are reasonable, logical and not always agree with what is said, but they perform a. valuable public service by informing listeners and viewers of one view of subjects of importance to all of us. For this reason we extend to KSL Editorial Board our "Bouquet of Roses" Award for their positive contribution to better under- -' standing of the important issues facing us on the local, state and national levels. We encourage all our readers to become better informed by listening to these editorials every day. Another' "Bouquet of Roses Award to Utah women for keeping the Utah Abortion rate among the lowest in the nation. Many arguments have been offered both in favor and in opposition to abortion. One argument against abortion not often mentioned, which we believe is a very important one, has to do with potential. Our schools have the purpose of helping children achieve the greatest development of their intellectual, social and physical potential. It has never been determined when life begins and there is disagreement religiously about when the spirit enters the body of the fetus, but no one can dispute the fact that from the moment of conception, the fetus has a potential for development and growth into an adult human being who can make a positive contribution to mankind. This, if no other reason, should compel us to limit abortions to only those that achieve some greater end than the potential offered by that unborn scientifically child. A "Handful of Thorns" Award to Mr. Joe Behunin for his shabby treatment of the West Jordan City Planning and Mr. Behunin Zoning Commission on September 24. 1975. said things during that meeting that were uncomplimentary to the members of the Commission for which Mr. Behunin should have apologized. The Gazette, in its September 26th edition, suggested that Mr. Behunin offer an apology but to our knowledge none has been forthcoming. Mr. Behunin presented to the Commission a petition front citizens to develop a new shopping center in West Jordan. No question hut that a new shopping center is needed, but there are already two corners of the intersection where Mr. Behunins property, the old West Jordan Elementary school, is located that are already zoned for commercial development and there are several developers ready to build on these two comers once the question of Mr. Bchunin's request for rezoning is If the school property is rezoned, there is a determined. chance most of these developers will cancel their that good plans - there isn't a need fur three corners to be developed. Furthermore, Mr. Behunin's property is far too small to develop into an adequate shopping center. He has just over II acres but more than twice that acreage is needed for the type of development he envisions, so that there would be sufficient parking available. The two properties already zoned for commercial development have 20 to 35 acres each and would give West Jordan worthwhile commercial development. Finally, the master plan for West Jordan requires that the old schooi remain for public use. For the future good of the city, West Jordan's citizens should go to the rezoning hearing on October 21. 1975. at 8 p.m. and oppose the rezoning of the school property. mr ITY MM2 ,o, Your Informative Vol. 1 Community News Source?' The Gazette in the past few weeks has attempted to present Information on why the property should not be re zoned. ' The main being that Wert Jordan has paid $25,000 for master plan . which shows the orderly growth and developement which a city can be working This week the Gazelle will present a few questions that could be raised if the property were rezoned commercial. The property now sits on a corner. On each side and on the back there sits a church building and an apartment complex. Also it is right next to the city park. reIf the property were zoned commercial the problems which would be created would be enormous with many hazards being sdded to the childten already living in the area in the apartment complex Mail-a-Bo- -- Mail-a-Boo- k Mail-a-Boo- k, 943-761- 4.
