'and it la completely encircled by cliff a Crater Of A Volcano . i; Geologist ; find it of the greatest In tereat from the way it was formed. Many volcanoes, such as Mt. Rainier have had their heads blown off. when is eruption, but Mt Mazama la tha Jnly one In the United States Btatea the top of which fell in and was later lied with water, making a huge lake ef exquisite beauty. In speaking ef a, ?V 41 tl if : ; . s 13 H ft & A ' Its formation a noted geologist haa eald, "The evidence of the process ef Its making la quite conclusive. The lava found on the elopes that remain was not blown there from an exploding summit, but ran hot and fluid from a crater many thousands of feet higher. The pitch of these outer slopes enable the scientist to tell with reasonable probability how high the volcano originally waa There are crater lake In other land In Italy, for Instance, In Germafiy, India and Hawaii and although there are thousands of crater In tbla country, aom of which, contain small lakes, there 1 but one great caldera In the world and that Oontaln Crater Lake." It waa discovered In 12SI by eleven Californians who had undertaken a search for the famous and perhaps fabulous Lost Cabin mine. Thera was more or leu secrecy about the hunt, for a number of Oregonians were alao trying to find the mine and it became a game of hide and seek. Suddenly the California party came upon this beautiful body of water by the stopping of a blind mule upon which on of the men. was riding at the very rim perhaps 100 feet above the lake. The discoverers called It Deep Blue Lake and Mysterious Lake, ' but In 1SI9 It waa named Crater Lake a name now settled upon by tot government and in 1903 it waa dedicated as a National Park. Picturesque In Coloring There la something beautiful in the mystery of the place which changes under the different llghta At one point there la a formation of lava known as the Phantom Ship because, seen at a distance. It resembles a ship under full sail while at otheY slant of the light it disappears entirely and la a genuine phantom. 8een by the moonlight or at dusk the illusion la perfect. Wizard's Island, which la a crater within a crater, la another of the Lake's mysteries. It Ilea close to to cliffs near toe western shore, end when looked on from the shore above it seems like a submerged range of There Is a trail across mountalna the mysterious Island which leads across the top and to toe very bottom of the Crater If on cares to climb down one hundred feet. The western section of the Island Is rough lava with many hollows ohe of which Is known aa the Witches Caldron. The Island Is remarkable because It has a crater and pool and la within toe lake. Crater Lark show some superb reflections from this Island. The Sand Pinnacles are another queer formation which while not directly In the lake are on the Rim Road about three miles down Band Creek Canyon. They sa-- sharp pointed formations formed In the sides of the Canyon by the wind and rain, which e haa carved them out Into fantastic shapes. They rise to the height of at least one hundred feet and are especially uncanny In the moonlight. Fine Auto Roads There Is an automobils road around tha entire lake and every turn la full of Interest. At Anna Spring Camp there Is a great canyon, where the visitor looks down a huge timbered gorge where a beautiful' waterfall known as Dewle Falls sweeps down over the rocks forming rainbows with Nearby Is another canyon where there are queer formation - such as are found in the Colorado Gardeirof the Gods. On the level above are meadows spread like a Persian carpet made of wild flowers of almost every color. Indeed toe scene la like fairyland with the deep blue lake far be- - neath the picturesque crags and cliffs and the blending ' of nature's wild flowers. Scotts Lake Sad Union Peak, nearly (.000 feet above sea level, can be reached on horse back within a quarter of a m'le of Its conical top which Is the cinder cone of an old volcano and very interesting to even the most blase traveller. The great peak known as the Watchman, the highest peak on the rim of the Lake, can be easily reached by automobile or by an To The camping regulations are the same as thos of other National Parks made Xoc .Lhs.safety.of th people. There are boats for trips on th lake, and Wizard's Island and The Phantom Ship are reached In this way. Lunch can be taken and the entire day spent at these points wandering about over these strange geological formations There are also dally trips around the lake where the striking features of th craters rim can be seen from below. These striking points of nature have keen well named and It requires little imagination to make out the Wineglass, e strange rock on the northern side shaped Ilka a huge goblet and that known as Shell Head a rock which forms th striking features of an Indian. Sentinel Rock, a huge rock that stands alone as If to guard the ezquls-It- e jewel of a lake at Its feet and looms up so It can be seen for miles. The Devils Backbone, carved and ridged.
