A CONSPICUOUS FAILURE. veitlret iri rejranl to toe attempt of the prosecutiug officers to make political capital out of the trial of the validity of the special tax levied lu the Seventh School District, is, so far as we have been able to ascertain, that it waa a miserable failure. Thj doubtless anticipated flndiDg a penu-in- e "nigyer 4n, Uie fence' and the a Hcope allowed tliein being of such wide- - character, enabling them to rake in without atiut every circumstance that could, by adroit twistlusr, be construed to the detriment of the "Mormon" Church, made their defeat all thu more clear and conspicuous. One of the leading efforts of the prosecution was to show that State officers were mere tools in the hands of the autnoritlcs of the Church, whose dictum, it was asserted, must be obeyed in teiuporal as well as spiritual concerns. The Book of Doctrine and Covenants containing the Church arTin- - Keneral J ticles, requirements and regulations, were admitted as evidence on this point. It was clearly shown by the defense, however, from the pages of that standard work, recognized by Latter-da- y Saints that, tho of reverse the exhibited it what the prosecution sought to establish. Copious extracts were read from it to that effect, showing that the genius of the Church embodies the real essence of democracy. In addition to thejassagea to this effect so intelli-be gently presented in Court, it may well to give the following, from page " 137 : "And all things shall be done by mon consent in the Church." com- And on page 1G1 : "But, verily, I say unto you, that ir I !mc villi shall have no king nor ruler, and watch over for I will be your King my voice am you. Wherefore, near follow me, and you shall be a free peo pie." crvthinir A. .'- - r.ould be more L 1 1 1 V ,.i 'II WK8TERM S-- knd: CKloN TKLBORAFB UHE. LATEST BY Blocks. Thkre is an old saw to tbe effect that "a lie will travel ten leagues while truth is putting on his boots," which is exemplified almost daily in the lies which are circulated about the "Mormons." As a rule, newspaper men seize with avidity and do their best to circulate anything that is unfavorable to the "Mormons" (which, by the way almost invariably happens to be that which is untrue,) but they are very loth indeed to publish anything! in their favor, or in other words the truth about them. Ah example will serve to illustrate this. On- the arrival of a company of "Mormon" emigrants in New York in November last the New York Aun published a sensatiyial story about a young girl named Lavluia Coop being rescued from the "Mormons" through the intervention of friends, and about certain violent efforts being made by the Elders who accompanied thi company to compel her to go along with them ; as well as scandalous statements about those same Elders ccc, on the drinking, voyage from Liverpool to New York. The prospect of hanger, or cold, or persecution, or imprison ment, or even death does .not prevent them from doing.thelr doty in tbfs respect, for they feel as Paul said he did : "Necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe fs unto me if I preach not the Gospel!" They hail with pleasure the prospect of any new Held for missionary labor being opened, for they have a longing desire that "every nation, kindred, tongue and people" may have the privilege of hearing the Gospel. It will therefore prove encouraging to them to learn that an effort is about to be made to introduce the Gospel Into Turkey. President John Henry Smith, !of the European Mission, has for some months past been in communication with quite an intelligent gentleman lu Constantinople, who has been investigating our doctrines and has become satisfied of the truth of them. This gentleman thinks there is a good open-lu- g there for establishing a mission, and with this end in view, Elders Jacob Sporl and George C. Naegle, of the German Mission, have oecu appointed by President Smith to go there. We tiall watch with interest for further developments in connectiou with this missionary field. teachers are excluded from the District Schools, because they are not In the Church; falls flatly to the ground, being demolished by the. mere fact that teachers have are now employed been and a the common schools. If such a situation as the prosecution endeavored 'but failed to prove existed there would be no instance of this na ture. The fact of the preponderance of "Mormon" teachers is explained by the fact of members of tbe Church being overwhelmingly in tbe majority. The prosecution did not confine themselves to the school question in their efforts to show that an absolutism exists. The attempt was also made to exhibit a similar situation politically, ft has been constantly asserted that the nominations for office in the People's Parfcy are dictated by tbe Priesthood and the people are bound to sustain then bitheir votes.Yet that members of the Chnrch have on many occasions bolted the1 People's Party tickets is a matter of notoriety, and the bolters, including those who have run for office on opposition tickets, are still members of the Church, some of tthem Home Missionaries and holding other positions oi responsibility in 1 and have been subsequently selected for political positions of trust, honor and emolument by the People's Party. We take the liberty of citing those who shout so much about "Mormon" Church control, to the authoritative sermon of Bishop Spaulding, of Peoria, Illinois, delivered recently at theJRo-ma- u Catholic Plenary Council at Baltimore, in which he claimed for the church, authority iu temporal as well as spiritual matters, and placed in the order in which allegiance should be given by the citizen as:' "First, the Church; second, the Family, third, the State." Yt not a howl was raised from any quarter of tbe land against this extraordinary claim. The assertions so frequently made that the "Mormons" are under an absolutism grows out of the fact of their extraordinary unity, which is not an outgrowth of an existing tyranny, but of an intelligent understanding of correct, principles. Nothing would more effectively break this phenomenal unanimity than the condition that is falsely claimed to obtain. Auy attempt to exercise tyrannical coutrol over them and deprive them of their freedom would make quick work in the .demolition ot the admirable harmony that prevails in the community. flUERBACH |
