Show THE EVENING NEWS. that they may have something to say upon this question. Arfl S, 1S7S. DISCOURSE Bit Elder LORENZO SNO IT, delivered Pijrxar bup xczxxo ditebsitt or PEOPLE OP VTAII. 7 TUC las TabornocUSoU Sunday. Jan 23d. . .. In yesterday's News will be found some clippings from Eastern papers on the subject of the Cullom BUI. They afford very good idea of ;the fueling which prevails respecting this mtuure. Thinking, observing men, however much they may dislike polygamy, can not but see that the passage of aach a Bill, and the making of It a law of the land, will be attended with Innumerable evllj. It Is no light afTalr for a Government, such as our Is to interfere with the right of conscience. If the Latter-da- y Saints are to be told what they may or may not believe, how long will it be until some other denomina tion shall have a faith prescribed for it? If one man's faith can be Interfered with, why not another? Let this Bill pass, and a door is opened for the inauguration of sectarian strife, which will not terminate until free thought is ut terly tided, and medieval tyranny and superstition once more reign unchecked. If the "Mormons" are to be punished for believing the entire word of God, why not the Protestants be persecuted and bunted for belleTlng a portion of It, or for putting their own Interpretations upon It, tnatsad or trusting to priest to explain and comment upon it? Or why not the Roman be compelled to abandon their peculiar, tenets? If men can be exposed to the penalty of me law ror bdlmvlag mora than the dominant party think; they .bQuId.wby not make it a penal offence for not believing as much as they do, and subject and lnfldels to punishment for tbelr unbelief? Let door of this kind onoe be opened in this Republic, and it will be found a difficult matter to close It again. There are many who seem to realise that there Is danger in this kind of legislation, and they oppose It. There are others who frankly admit that such a measure Is not constitutional; but then It is Intended for the "Mormons," and why should there be any regard paid to the Constitution in their case? There are two classes who are urging members of Congress to enact severe laws against the people of Utah they are religions bigots and contractors. It was men of the first class who crucified Jesus, persecuted and slew hi a followers and drenched the soli of the old world with the blood of the noble and the free who would not subscribe to their narrow and Illiberal tenets. It was the latter class who, vulture-likstood to ready profit by the ruin which tbey had urged on, worshipping no God but mammon and ready to part with honor and to sell body and soul for filthy C-tbo- llci rree-thlake- rs e, lucre. With the first class honor, honesty, virtue, temperance, good order and every other noble quality which a people can manifest pass for naught, so long as those who possess them are not of their creed and will net bow down to their shrloe. With the other class the greed for money overpowers every other consideration; they can contemplate blood-sherapine, the destruction of a people and the desolation of their home, with complete calmness and equanimity, so long as they can see a prospect of making money thereby. If these classes bad their way, the fate of the people of Utah would soon be written. But there are other influences at work. There is a class of people, and they are a large and influential class, who look at all these matters from a different stand-poin- t; they are not bigots, neither do they expect fat contracts by inaugurating a crusade against the "Mormons." They are not so noisy and Impudent as the others, aud therefore, In the beginning are not much heeded. But when they do move their Influence Is felt. Then the reaction begins, and Justice is heard. Already this class begins to make It self heard. We have been gratified at the wide publicity which has ' been given to the Remonstrance which was adopted by the General Mass Meeting laatThursday week. It has gone to every psvper ia the Union connected with the ajjociatetl preaj. It will be read by millions, and will give tho public a correct idem of oar position and the natnr of the evils with which we are threatened. It will evoke Men wilt ass: themaelTes, sympathy. "',tvr JLak 1S70. i v - .UAy ni -- 1 REPORTED BY JOHJC OKIMXHAW. In addressing an assembly of Saints, I expect the benefit of their prayers, without the ceremony of asking, being assured that they are aware as well as I am that our teachings and admlals- trations in the gospel of life, are blessed to us according to our faith and prayers, and the diligence we give and the at tention we bestow. I propose to make some general ob servations upon the gospel and JU administrations, and in relation to its effects when received, and the Impor tant blessings derived by this comma nlty through its divine power and vlr tue. This gospel, .which God has commanded us to offer to the world, is an order or system of things, simple, plain, and may be easily understood. In regard to Its principles, the nature of its requirements, and the precise kind and character of its blessings and promises, no one, however Ignorant or unlearned, needs be left In the dark any great length of time; but may dis cover Its golden truths, and the em blazoned mark or divinity In Its ar rangements as distinctly, as speedily as Naaman, tho Captain of the Assyrian host, found divlnvlrtae, indthehand of Divinity in the order prescribed to him by Elijah, through which hi leprosy was removed. In his case, the order of obtaining miraculous blena In logs, viz: to immerse seven times so was as prescribed by Elijah Jordan, to the so and in regard plain, simple, its divine of efllcacy, so easy knowledge of ascertainment, that the great Cap tain, at first, was exceedingly wratby at the Idea that God should propose to work upon him through such easy means and simple forms; but the order, through which he could be healed of his leprosy was prescribed of God through the Prophet, and .finally the Assyrian officer, through the plain, his servant, concluded to waive his objections, and comply with the requirements, and having done so, he received tb promised blessing. The first principles of the gospel which we offer, aud which put men In possession of the revelations of Ood and of a knowledge of this work, are precisely as simple, plain, and as easy of understanding, as the order before alluded to, through which the Heavens were opened in Naainau'a behalf. This Gospel was brought to our respective habitations far remote from these mountain vales. It found us citizens of many nations, speaking our respective languages, each possessing his peculiar notions and prejudices, with his associations, and a strong attachment to kindred, friends and country. However unpleasant, unkind, un just and inconsistent It might appear at first; yet we clearly foresaw that, la receiving this gospel, we should be compelled to break up those associations, and sever those attachments, leaving the lands of our nativity, and going forth with our wives and children to a distant land, of which we had but lit tie knowledge. But a similar requsltlon was made upon the House of Israel, in the land of Egypt; also upon Noah and his family, and upon Abraham and the family of Lot, In the City of Sodom; and upon the families of Iehland mentioned in the Book of Mormon. But In the provisions of the gospel which was offered to u, there were fairness and safety; It proposed to give us, through obedience to Its requirements, a perfect knowledge of Its Divine authenticity, so that in leaving our kindred, breaking up our social relations, and going forth from our native land, we should first become perfectly assured that it was no human contrivance, something gotten up to effect some political purpose, or gratify some worldly ambition, to achieve some private end through human dinning and craftiness. The gospel was plain and simple in its requirements; and there could be no mistaking the precise na ture and character of its bletsiogi and prom Ises, nor the manner and time in which they were to be reached! The first feature In this system, which struck us with surprise, and arrested our attention, was its perfect similarity in all Its parts, with the gospel as re-corded in tue new Testament; is re quired repentance, and a forsaking (of sins, immersion In water Cor-- , the.xe mis sion of sins, with a promise that, through the laying on of hands by those having author! tyvpeople should receive the Holy Ghost, should "come a knowledge of the truth of the doc trine.
