Show X Hawkins Likes To Play S.L. Baseball Teams Sports CommentnryKeith Duncan Pm Proud To Ki OGDEN - Thfcre was a little doubt after two dr three hours of the 12th annual Weber State Track and Field Invitational, but those doubts were quickly erased only hours later as John Flints 85 brigade marched off the Wildcat football field with their second straight championship. THE DOUBT was whether Flint could put together another, yes another, well tuned and fine track and field team. Well folks, hes done it again. Its true. The Falcons will be in the thick of it again in 1985. Im not predicting a region championship or even a coveted state title, but -- Davis Jeff Ohlwiler will be trying to bust state record in the javelin. they will be as competitive as theyve ever been. LAST SATURDAY they staged a record and after 1 years of I'll say, no one in Davis County or the state of Utah has done more for high school kids 1 sport-swritin- g, dramatic comeback to beat Ben Lomond for the prestigious right of being No. at one of the states biggest outdoor invitationals. To know Flint is to know a true gentleman and a man who is committed to helping kids succeed. Maybe thats why he has the track record behind him like he does, perhaps the finest track record of any track coach in Utah for the past decade. emotional and physical growth than what Hint has. A select few THE MAN is truely amazing in every sense of the word. To.go on leagues, his fellow coaching staff, writers and everyone else to look at 1 nt have equalled him, but have done no more than he. That includes principals of schools, administrators of school districts, music teachers, science teachers or any other position that involves working with high school kids. Flint is a head above em all. WHY? Because this guy shuns the limelight and forces his col- the kids. He will probably give me after his article, but Im only telling it like it is. Hes got the ability to take kids like Todd Walker, this years high jump specialist, and make them feel special. Prior to the indoor season he took Walker aside and communicated with him. The result has been tremendous and neither Walker or his family will ever forget that man. a hate-ca- ll THE MISSIONARY farewells have always had his name in them, hardly anyone forgets a man who really cares about you. The Ralph Carter family has not officially adopted him into their clan, but theyd like to. What Flint did for Mark Carter and what he does for Craig these days is too difficult to put in words. THE kid-liis endless and I mean that. No, success at Clearfield doesnt come solely because of one guys drive to recruit kids and pat them on the behind when they do good, but comes instead through hours and hours of endless time spent leading the way by example. No one in any field, athletic or scholarly, puts in the time that Flint does. st AND THATS the reason field track is No. Clear- 1. Tracksters To Converge On Davis District Meet BOUNTIFUL - Track coaches Layton High in Davis fcouqty choose to call the annual Davta District Track: and Field Meet their 'favorite meet o the year. THE REASONS are many but one of the most significant is the fact the meet is short (just the six schools) and brings together three or four of the top track teams in the state (adds to the excitement of wholl win it). The 1985 meet will take place this Friday (beginning at 2 p.m.) and continuing on into Saturday. Its scheduled to take place at Viewmont High School, the home of the defending state champions. MOST preliminaries will take place on Friday for both the men and the women. The only finals on Friday will occur in the pole vault, long jump and discus. Lynn DuBois has a Viewmont club minus many of the blue-chippe- rs that helped them win the 84 title, but dont count the Vikes out. Word is out that Dubois wants to make a good showing as the host school and theyve got the folks to do it. They scored only three points in the Weber State meet two weeks ago and want to show people theyve got more than that. RUSS JONES and Layton High believe theyve got one of their best teams in years and theyll be striving to get the trophy just as much. If the Lancers were to get the right kind of breaks, they could win it. Davis High and Mike Shaw will be sending a few of their athletes to the Coaches Invitational at West Jordan High to qualify for state but theyll have plenty at Viewmont who will make a difference. AND LAST but not least is Clearfield. The Falcons have dominated this event over the years and John Flints 85 crew will be a favorite faagain. Perhaps they are more vored now than what earlier ex- pected because of their strong showing at the Weber State Invita- tional. Bountiful and Woods Cross will have a few key athletes at Viewmont but as a team dont have any chance of winning the team title. SOME OF the key athletes from south Davis County high schools will include people like Dave Bran-ne- n of Woods Cross who should win the pole vault easily. Others include Carl Ward of Woods Cross who has been tabbed to win the 100 meters, Greg Sharp in the 200 meters from Viewmont, Matt Bombard of Bountiful in the 200 meters, Mike Middleton of Viewmont in the 400 meters, Ken Collings of Woods Cross in the 400, Con Fox of Viewmont in the 800, Alan Sorenson of Viewmont in the mile and Viewmont as a team in the sprint relay. SOME OF the top girls in the south include Jenny Miller of Viewmont who could win the shot, discus and javelin. Amy Titensor comes back as the defending state champion in the shot put from Viewmont and in the 800 meters it will be Elizabeth Taylor of Woods Cross. Amy Sessions of Woods Cross will also be tough in the mile and two mile races. The following is a close look at Layton, Clearfield and Davis for the upcoming meet. People may do a lot of talking about Clearfield, Hillcrest, Alta and others, but Layton may be the darkhorse that sneaks in and surprises people this year. Russ Jones really wants hi$ team to do well at the Davis Dislrict for confidence. FOUR sophopiores, that could put Layton over the top this year are all sprinters, four thdt Jones hopes will come along quickly in the next few weeks. They include Gary Wilhyde, Darrell Grey, Joe Christensen and William Reed. They will run Laytons sprint relay and the latter three will run in the 100 and 200 meters. Wilhyde is suffering from a pulled muscle at the moment. Laytons medley hope will rest with Rich Lovelace, Lyle Morse, Don Flitton and Keith Keller. JOHN Wagstaff will be making a comeback this week and if hes ready by the weekend hell run in both the 400 meters and the mile relay. Other mile relay people include Dennis Sanner, Darrell Martin and Terry Kealamakia. Other open 400 people include Morse and Sanner. The 800 will include Paul Kealamakia, Scott Nance and Don Flitton. Rich Elmore, Mike Day and Brent Hughes will take the 1600 meters into their hands and the 3200 meters will have Darren Moon added to the list. LAYTON may have the best hurdle people in the state with Kealamakia and Martin there. Kanchit Watson is a sophomore is another up and coming hurdler. In the shot Layton will field Steve Ford, Tim Frazier and Paul Brayant. ROBERT Porter has already qualified for state in the discus as just a sophomore. Ron Barker and Brett Christensen will also compete. Joe Midkiff, Craig Dahl and Dave Totero lead a good javelin trio. LONG JUMP specialists include Martin, Lovelace and Saman Doungadara. In the high jump Layton will send Craig Stevens and Troy Johnson. SOPHOMORE pole vaulter Clint Browers has gone 12 feet and could be the big surprise of the year so far. Davis High 17 feet off the mark. DAVIS WILL still have quite a crew at Viewmont this weekend, folks like Eric Thompson in the discus who could easily win that event. Competition at the Davis District in the discus could be one of the most competitive events with the people Clearfield will bring. There is no question however, that the departure of Butterfield, Ryujin, Gunty and Hess will take away quite a few points from the Davis team at View'mont. KEVIN Hutchins has come along in the discus event and there was still a question of what event he might go to this weekend. Davis two high jumpers will be in attendance at Viewmont, perhaps two of the top six high jumpers in the state. Scott Moon and Greg Willard both jumped 4 at the Weber State meet. ONE DAVIS pole vaulter has jumped 12-- 0 and thats Dave Snowball. Hell also be at Viewmont. Moon has shown tremendous potential in the long jump, having gone 20-CLAY Singley has looked very impressive in the javelin and long jump and he too will be at Viewmont. al, Mike Shaw has opted to send a few of his athletes to this weekends Coaches Invitational at West Jordan High School. The reason: to get them qualified for state. I HATE not to have my entire team at one meet, but since the Davis District isnt a state qualifying meet, Ive got no other choice. Actually the Davis meet is my favorite meet and well have a crew there to represent us, said Shaw. Shaw plans to send Troy Butterfield, Kelly Ryujin, Mark Gunty and Chris Hess in the medley relay at West Jordan. Javelin superstar, Jeff Ohlwiler will also attend the West Jordan meet in an attempt to break the state record. At Weber State he threw 205 feet and is still Falcons, Darts Record n Baseball Fiasco 6-- 8. Clearfield High Winning the Weber State Invitational was no fluke for Clearfield High, but the big question is whether the Falcons and John Flint can improve on that performance and try to bring home the schools first state trach championship. THATS what Flint is hoping for. This weekend the 85 Falcon crew will enter their second big meet of the year, the Davis District with hopes of improving in the sprints, the hurdles and the middle distance races. If they improve like Flint wants them to, they might have a chance of winning the 1,985 title providing the field event crew comes alive like they did in Ogden two weeks ago. INJURIES and uncertainities over who will actually run in the sprints and in the sprint relay hang over Clearfield. The candidates include people like Geryard Strache, Ron Ryubal, Jimmy Tubbs and Greg Boykin. They ran their best time of the year in a dual against Roy last week but Flint said they could still improve a bunch. There is achance Craig Carter could even run in the sprints right now. With the cancellation of last weekends Icebreaker Invitation- ley to Clearfield's success in relay races. The Falcons will try and defend their Davis District championship this Friday and Saturday at Viewmont High School. Don Gladfelter (center) is a big CLEARFIELD continues to be happy with the improvement of junior Pepo Olivas. He threw the javelin 179 feet last week and combines that with his efforts in the shot put and discus. All the field events look strong for Clearfield with exception of the long jump which Flint says is coming along. TWO Clearfield jumpers did extremely well in the pole vault, as Todd Ferguson went 6 and Kent Bodily went 12-Ferguson broke his pole or could have gone 13-Sophomore Lance Roberts ran a 52.0 in the 400 meters which gives the Falcons hope there. 1 2-- IF CLEARFIELD does come around in the questionable areas, they could b a strong contender for the title this year. 33-Ru- When the rain and cold came late last week, it prompted Davis High baseball coach, Kent Draayer to say, I can't believe it, Utah baseball weather has finally arrived . IT WAS a little hard to believe that the sun and warmth lasted as long as it did but teams at Clearfield. Layton and Davis wasted no time in getting in all the action they could. Its certainly been a big change over the past couple of years. This week, as the rain pounded down Monday and was in the forecast for more days through the week, the three northern Davis County schools were still scheduled to get in as many games as they could. LAYTON was to host two games this week with Bountiful coming to their place on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and Granite visiting them Thursday at 3:30. Davis only solid game this week was a Tuesday meeting with Roy at sprayed the nine hits around. Brian Bailey collected a triple, Sam Mil-li- n had two hits and Tom Montano had a double. 'WE'RE STILL trying to find the pitching, shortstop position. Clearfield High Roy. Clearfield was to have Layton High In Laytons only game last week, the Lancers lost to Brighton 2 even though they out hit the 3-- strong Bengal team 9-- 7. James Koit wright and Randy Cowderdid the pitching for Layton. BRAD Hawkins said his team played well in the game that was played at Brighton. He stated, I like to play the Salt Lake schools early because it gives our kids some kind of indication where they stand up with the big boy s from the south. Baseball is a big thing at most Salt Lake schools. Its not uncommon to see those kids playing in two or three different leagues and play ing as many as five or six times a week during the summer months. BRIGHTON does have a decent team this year but Hawkins made the honest observation that the Bengals might only be the third best team in their region. They come from the Taylorsville and Hillcrest group. In the loss to Brighton, Layton left 4uite a few kids on base and Clearfields Ken Hicks called win over Davis last Frithe day night, "a fiasco. But the veteran coach will take em any17-1- 1 Hicks. Davis High Laytons first league game comes next week on Tuesday, April 30 when Clearfield comes to town. pre-seas- traveled to Bountiful on Thursday with the possibility of playing an earlier game with someone on Tuesday. said Hawkins. Right now I feel that Kortwright is improving like wed like and Bailey could also help us out on the mound even though we're hurt defensively when he does pitch because it takes him away from the Fisher all are hitting Jbe ball well for the Falcons. Were starting to pl.n bettei now that we've got people in the positions that we want them. We got Dan el (Hicks) back last week at shoitstop which helped and in time I believe we II have Maik Adams back. Betore Adams left he was our No. pitcher, said Coach 6 Its that youthful punch that is bringing things alive at Davis High School. Said Draayer about it, The young kids are keeping us in there. The experience theyre getting is invaluable. THE DARTS upped their preseason record to 2 last week as they beat a good Bonneville team 3 but lost to Clearfield late last week In the Bonneville victory it was senior Greg Norton going the distance for the Darts. Davis was leading 2 in the seventh but the Lakers scored a lone run in the last inning to make it 4-- 4-- way he can. 17-1- NOT ONLY did the Falcons blast out 17 runs in beating Davis, they also won earlier in the week in a game by beating View mont where neither team could buy a run. In the Viewmont outing, Danny Richardson went the entire distance for the Falcons, giving up just four hits. Hicks said both teams played great defensively as only one error a piece was committed on either side. THE GAME was played in windy conditions which held the ball up more than usual. Ryan Fisher hit a monster that would have been over the fence had the wind not held it up. Clearfield scored their winning run in the seventh inning as Jeff Folk singled to get on. Eventually he worked himself to third before Steve Carlson laid down a w inning bunt single to bring Folk home. IN THE victory over Davis, Hicks said, everybody hit it. Davis had gone ahead 8 in the seventh inning but Clearfield, with two outs, had Fisher get a single, reach second on a passed ball and finally scoring the tying run on a Folk single. That sent the game into a w ild and frenzy eighth inning in which Clearfield scored eight runs and Davis seven. The game wasnt over until after 7 p.m. last Friday night. 9-- RICHARDSON, Folk, and 4-- 4-- 3. I ASKED Greg how he was feeling in the fourth and he noted everything was fine. I was really pleased with how he lasted, said Draayer. Norton is presently the clubs No. pitcher and things will probably be rotated about so Norton can start in the league opener on April 30 against Woods Cross. Thats next Tuesday. Davis had Clearfield in the latter n explosion, but part of their the Falcons were allowed back in it and went on to hand Davis only their second loss of the DARRF.N Sandstrom started for Davis on the mound but after allowing four runs in the opening inning was taken off. Shane Brow n came on in relief before Sandstrom came back and pitched again. Hitting home runs for the Darts were Norton. Sandstrom (a blast), and Mike Robinson who hit a booming solo shot. Norton went 3 for 5, Robinson was 3 for 4, David Bush was 3 for 5 and John Timothy was 3 for 5. TODD SNARR, with a broken nose right now, is expected to return to the line-u- p soon, maybe as soon as this week. However Dave Peterson will be lost for the rest of the season due to injury. 1 33-ru- |
