Dennis Smith has been involved in the Monument to Women series of sculptures which are now in Nauvoo, 111. Fulfillment depicts a grandmother in a rocking chair with a quilt spread over her lap. In preparation for this sculpture, Mr. Smith asked people in his home of Alpine, where Dorothys Bertha lives, if they had a quilt using an old, traditional pattern. Bertha showed him a Double Wedding Ring quilt made 25 years ago for her by Dorothy. It is this quilt which Mr. Smith ultimately used. In a personal letter to Mrs. Phillips, Mr. Smith expressed the significance to him of the Fulfillment sculpture and his reasons for choosing her quilt as a model.
